I just double checked.... apparently the monarch owns all the mute swans "on open water" that are not owned (marked) by anyone else. Some places say throughout England, other say just stretches of the Thames.

If they were crown property before you marked them, you just marked somebody else's swan.

I was partaking of a constitutional perambulation around Pennington Flash a month ago and the swans were feeding on some weeds at the edge of the water. Most were fairly chilled but there was one that went absolutely berserk whenever another swan came within about 10 feet of it.

It probably had a disadvantaged upbringing. We shouldn't judge it too harshly. [/bleeding heart mode]

This one in Chicago won't need to offer mitigating circumstances.

The guy was on private property, and the swan can claim self defence, and that it was in genuine fear of it's life.
If it's daddy has a bit of influence, it should be fine.

If people notice it had a semiofficial position of keeping its neighborhood free of darker colored geese, though, it will get arrested.
