The thing about all swans in England being owned by the King is a myth. The King owned the swans on a short stretch of the Thames and that was it.Svartalf wrote:I've heard it said that the "law" saying that all swans in Britain belong to the king was more to avoid people getting killed than to reserve hunting rights to the sovereign.

Not quite. All wild Mute swans (a sub species, though a common one) are still owned by the monarch.Pappa wrote:The thing about all swans in England being owned by the King is a myth. Re: Man killed by swan
I just double checked.... apparently the monarch owns all the mute swans "on open water" that are not owned (marked) by anyone else. Some places say throughout England, other say just stretches of the Thames.Rum wrote:Not quite. http://www.royal.gov.uk/ says the ownership dates from the 12thC, and:
Today, the Crown retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but The Queen only exercises her ownership on certain stretches of the Thames and its surrounding tributaries.

If they were crown property before you marked them, you just marked somebody else's swan.
I can't see how that makes it yours. But I'm going to try.

If people notice it had a semiofficial position of keeping its neighborhood free of darker colored geese, though, it will get arrested.mistermack wrote:This one in Chicago won't need to offer mitigating circumstances.klr wrote:It probably had a disadvantaged upbringing.
