A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

No, no, no, you have to insult great swathes of people here, not one person in particular. The more people you insult, the less likely you'll be called out by the staff.

That probably explains why I haven't been called out by the staff here

I joined back in 2010 when they were founded, I'd say I haven't been there in some 18 months, never caught on or felt like following a thread, much less actually posting, despite the presence of people I liked on RDF

I can just quote, 'cause these comments cover also my motives pretty well:

There are some great people over there too, there are just so many that it's overwhelming to me most the time, so I just skim threads and don't join in discussions really.
Yup, this is me too.
I think this is me too. I like less crowded places personally.

I don't do the typical argument threads anymore since they never resolve and never bring up anything new. It's just not fun for me to be oh-so-serious online anymore. I'll throw in a comment on the more serious threads now and then, maybe post a link to something particularly galling, but I don't care if I 'win' or not...

Though I was never particularly active at RatSkep. Mostly read others' stuff. A lot of good brains over there, but too argumentative wrt the topics I was interested in. A bit of one-upsmanship, etc, in most of those discussions. I stopped visiting there for unrelated reasons, though.
I'm still glad the place exists and hope them all the best.
Yes, and I should clarify - I think it's great that people DO engage online in the serious discussions because everyone is new to new points of view at some point in their experience. I still glean some fresh insights when reading those threads, I just don't want to fight about things online.
Executive summary: "I'm growing old, and I don't mind that."

"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." -

that was what drove several of us to keep battling on the AGW front to protect the honest enquirers from the nonsense the deniers continue to toss out.
Wearying to say the least but mods were helpful at times.
I like both - I can be my far more naturally caustic self here -

I came here when Dawkins sank, went to RatSkep for a while, felt overwhelmed by a lot of the threads where there was no point in posting because someone more intelligent always articulated my thoughts better, and as my posts degenerated into 99% stupidity I came here where the threads are 99% stupidity

Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

I registered a couple of years ago but still have yet to post ... or really, read very much over there. I'll take another look, I suppose, but it looks like too much Srs Bsns for me. I'd probably get banned quickly anyway.
