The guinea pig hypothesis

Post by Rum » Mon Apr 02, 2012 7:19 pm

Twofy and I spent a couple of enjoyable, and in my case moderately hungover hours driving back up north the other day. We talked at one point about her poorly guinea pig and she told me that they poor things die rather easily. Basically they keel over if you so much as say 'boo' to them she says.

It got me thinking that individual death might actually be a survival mechanism for the local guinea pig tribe! I mean if they die that easily then the predator get his lunch, is full and stops hunting. And of course guinea pigs, being prolific breeders soon replace their absent friend!

Guinea pig hypothesis - meet selfish gene!

To that they say rumble rumble rumble squeak!
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

To seriously examine the question, one should look at the ecological dynamics of their wild ancestors in the Andes...

The modern guinea pig as pet is both outside its normal environmental range, and the result on many generations of selective breeding, making evolutionary interpretations rather difficult...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

OP...

To add to their problems, I bet they taste delicious.

It can't be easy being the perfect prey.

They are, in fact, reared by folks in the Andes in the same way we would rear rabbits for the pot...

They have been domesticated long ago...

At the hazard of having Twofy hunt me down and kill me, they can be quite tasty when prepared right. "Stew" being the most common medium I encountered. Stews are handy for stretching meat supplies.

I forgive you as long as you don't try to eat my boys.

Rum, it is your theory and it is yours. That is to say, this theory that it is...is yours :tea:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.
