First take nothing. Then turn it into something!

Post by Rum » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:11 pm

I have just finished watching a programme about the Heygens probe to Titan and some of the results. These guys landed a probe on a moon a billion miles away and took pictures ffs!

We have come a long way from sacrificing our firstborn, worshiping the moon and living in constant fear and superstition and for the very largest part we have done it all by ourselves making good stuff and amazing stuff from nothing at all, which is where we started. Not only do we go to the stars, but we cure diseases that killed by the million, make millions of lives better than they ever could have been in times gone by and what is more we keep trying to do even better stuff, despite odds that sometimes seem a bit overwhelming.

We are amazing! We may fail spectacularly, but if we do it won't be because we arent amazing but because we were too damn good at it all and couldn't quite keep up with ourselves.

Posting stone cold sober by the way!

We are pretty fucking wonderful and no mistake. I think it's because we all have Samuel Beckett's philosophy ingrained in our genes...

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Never mind the fall! Crumple will remind you all about that! There's not enough celebration of our amazingness in my view!

You're right. It's awesome what people have done.

Somehow, I can't see it all panning out anything like Gene Roddenberry envisaged, though... :ask:

What a piece of work is man
How noble in reason
How infinite in faculties
In form and moving
How express and admirable
In action how like an angel
In apprehension how like a god
The beauty of the world
The paragon of animals

I have of late
But wherefore I know not
Lost all my mirth
This goodly frame
The earth
Seems to me a sterile promontory
This most excellent canopy
The air-- look you!
This brave o'erhanging firmament
This majestical roof
Fretted with golden fire
Why it appears no other thing to me
Than a foul and pestilent congregation
Of vapors

What a piece of work is man
How noble in reason

How dare they try to end this beauty?
How dare they try to end this beauty?

Walking in space
We find the purpose of peace
The beauty of life
You can no longer hide

Our eyes are open
Our eyes are open
Our eyes are open
Our eyes are open
Wide wide wide!
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

Amazing, but not unique.

On a smaller scale, look what termites can do. They make structures every bit as impressive as what we make, scaled down. And they actually affect the climate of the planet, like we do, by producing vast quantities of methane, warming the planet.

And termites and humans do it in similar ways. No one man could fly to the moon, but if you get hundreds of thousands working together, it can be done. The whole project is split into smaller, more simple tasks, and each individual does a specialised job. Just like termites.

So, we are amazing, yes, but just like termites are amazing, as a society, working together. We can't do much on our own.

I would put my money on an individual human over an individual termite at a game of Scrabble any day of the week....

The most amazing thing about human is the efforts they have went to to to deny and rationalise their ape behaviours as somehow being something noble and not ape behaviour at all.
