Viruses replicate. That's bad.JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:How come there aren't any beneficial viruses like there are bacteria?

That's what they do, and they get out of control, as I understand it. A "good" virus wouldn't act like that, so it is probably something else.JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:

Re: OK...Daft Question...
Beneficial would entail benefits for both organisms such that a relationship is advantageous to the survival of both. Bacteria (etc) are living organisms, viruses aren't. Bacteria have attibutes to offer, viruses don't. Viruses hijack your cells to replicate more of themselves--you bear all the cost they gain all the advantage.
Why aren't there any beneficial tapeworms or prions?
I'm just guessing here.

There are some viruses used as lab tools

some viruses you can handle

We probably have viruses to thank for, for being here. Read the Lynn Margulis book. We are the parasites. Microbes run the world. Mostly bacteria, but virus help.

Re: OK...Daft Question...
There has been some medical use of viruses called phages that infect bacteria. The Russians are the leaders in this field, I believe. The trick is finding a phage that specialises in bacteria that are human pathogens such as golden staph; antibiotic resistance would not mean phage resistance...
The critical difference to bacteria, with respect to "usefulness" is that the majority of bacteria keep the wheels of the biosphere's recycling activities going, which viruses don't do...

Phages are big time good but the drug companies can't patent them.....draw your own conclusions...

Viruses do us a great deal of good by killing off the weakest among us.
