Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread
Nah, I have enough money to keep up my wasteful lifestyle till I'm dead. But I'm certainly open to green options. I've decided that I'm adding a solar heater to the pool, so I can cut back on burning all that LP gas in the winter. And I'm getting rid of the electric pool chiller and replacing it with an evaporative cooler. The pool will probably be a bit too warm in August and September, but I feel I must do My Fair Share! I've also started using the Jag for most of my around-town errands, though it's much easier to pile the stuff in the back of the pickup truck.
I'm such an eco-warrior.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I will be fine as well. I do know many folks, though, who are on the edge, and this sort of thing hits them hard.laklak wrote:Nah, I have enough money to keep up my wasteful lifestyle till I'm dead. Maybe they should means-test gasoline purchases, so that people who make less money or have lower net worths pay less per gallon.

Sounds like a great idea, particularly since I've tied it all up in trusts and can manipulate the numbers to claim abject poverty. I own nothing, and have almost no income, yer honor. I've been thinking of applying for food stamps, the cost of USDA Prime filet mignon was $27.99 a fucking pound at Publix today. That's up from $24.99 a pound just last week. I'll be damned if I'm going to start buying USDA Choice, fuck that, a man must maintain standards, you know.Coito ergo sum wrote: Maybe they should means-test gasoline purchases, so that people who make less money or have lower net worths pay less per gallon.

Costco has a good price on filet mignon. Pretty good stuff, too. Publix is pretty pricey on their meat.laklak wrote:Sounds like a great idea, particularly since I've tied it all up in trusts and can manipulate the numbers to claim abject poverty. For some reason, now that Obama is President, the media and his supporters pretend that there isn't any inflation. That is a laugh. I can HEAR the prices going up. The prices go up, and the packages get smaller. Have you checked out the price of Ruffles and Doritos snack chips? Holy fuck. It's like $4.69, for a small bag.

Gone above 1.70 €/l in several places here.

That is interesting in that the price of bacon and eggs is also going up around here. Anyone deciding to bike to work instead of drive must take into account the added calories needed to fuel their body, which, along with maintenance and tire wear on the bicycle, so, it may be a wash.MiM wrote:Gone above 1.70 €/l in several places here.

And, it may not even be better for the environment in the long run: http://dionysus.psych.wisc.edu/lit/Topi ... -jul06.pdf

Get used to it, and stop whining. Or buy a car with a smaller engine. Small engine does not necessarily mean small car.Coito ergo sum wrote:Filled up my tank from near empty yesterday. Broke the $80 mark.
Petrol prices are not likely to drop. We have depleted known oil reserves faster than we can find new ones for a long time. 80% of the stuff we use now comes from resources discovered more than 25 years ago. "Peak oil" is real. That is the principal factor for the price increases, not your current administration's doing.

Indeed, just come to California. I filled my tank from empty yesterday - total cost almost $60.00 at $4.39 a gallon. That will last me several weeks though.Seraph wrote:Get used to it, and stop whining.Coito ergo sum wrote:Filled up my tank from near empty yesterday. Broke the $80 mark.

With the petrol riots, we should see some Brits posting updates here soon.

Arrived in New Zealand on Thursday to find unleaded petrol priced at $2.17/litre. No riots.

Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
In Melbourne, the diesel I put in my Subaru Forester is currently $1.47 per litre (Aussie dollars, worth a little more than the yankee dollar at the moment...
)
I am averaging 6.8 litres per 100 km, which translates to around 41 mpg - pretty good for a decent sized 4WD... On long country runs I can get 6 litres per 100 km...
My weekly commute costs me around $25, which is quite reasonable...
