Too late for a Darwin award unfortunately

A woman suffered serious burns when petrol ignited as she was decanting it in the kitchen of her York home because her daughter had run out of fuel.

The woman, who is in her 40s, suffered 40% burns in the accident in the Acomb area of the city on Thursday.

She has been taken to the burns unit at Pinderfields Hospital.

A fire service spokesman said: "Her daughter asked her mum for petrol because she had run out. The cooker was on and the fumes ignited."

I once saw a woman keep on smoking while she filled up. I did not dare to yell at her, in case that would have startled her to drop the ciggie into an even less optimal place...

She scared the bejesus out of me. I really, really did not want to be around and could not get away fast enough.

I'm told that a lit cigarette and liquid petrol are not a fatal mix. Only when petrol is atomized, and then perhaps not. Though I am, or was, always paranoid of getting too close to a gas station with a lit cigarette. I nearly swallowed my tongue one night in high school, as we were out snowmobiling, and my machine stalled. In removing the gas cap to check my fuel, my cigarette fell straight from my lips into the open hole of the gas tank. I about died.

My uncle who is a mechanic use to throw cigarette butts into petrol and diesel.

The Mythbusters had a sequence on the gasoline thing. They were trying to see if you could out-run a flame applied to a trail of gasoline coming from your car. They found that the gasoline only ignited so quickly, not enough to threaten a person on foot if they ran. The conclusion was that the gasoline had to reach the temperature of vaporization because only the fumes burn.

A friend of mine did EXACTLY what this woman did, about thirty years ago, and burnt his house down and killed the cat. He was lucky, he was just singed.

If you pour petrol indoors, you are asking for trouble, as the fumes need to reach a certain concentration, but once they do, even static can ignite it. In his case, they think it was some automatic process in the central heating thermostat switch that set it off.

He's not stupid, but he did something stupid. We can all do that. I feel really sorry for that woman.
I've been burned by petrol, and it really REALLY hurts.

Diesel is very hard to ignite, but petrol is the complete opposite, it's absolutely lethal.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
