Augusta National - Admit Women?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Wed Mar 28, 2012 11:49 pm

Augusta is in the spotlight again. The new female CEO of IBM wants to join Augusta, and she has not received an invitation. http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?s ... men-032812

Women's groups, of course, think it's an outrage that the male-only club won't allow women in.

I personally think that it's silly to have a male-only club in this day and age, but that's mainly because I like hanging out with women and if I was in the club, I would like some around. However, I lean towards the attractive ones, so I'm not all that politically correct in my views....

But, I tend not have a major problem with the members of Augusta doing what they want on this issue, because, well, there are lots of women-only things and they are never considered "conservative" or "archaic" etc. The world seems perfectly fine with special accommodations for women only, like gyms and other facilities.

Now, the complaint may be that Augusta is popular among big-shooters. I don't think that is a distinction, however, that matters, because nothing is stopping big-shooter women from creating their own club. And, there are other clubs that are mixed and they too are full of big shooters.

What do y'all think?

I hear there are plenty... just not on the greens, and those you find there are, like, guests or escorts, for the errrmmm, members.

I don't. Just as there a places where women can be free from men, there should be places where men can go to be free from women. They are often a pain in the arse.

Still I guess allowing women into Augusta only affects about a couple of dozen women worldwise.

I'm guessing the Woman from IBM gives not a shit about her "sisterhood". As long as she gets to be privileged.

Emmeline Pankhurst was exactly the same. That elitist cunt wasn't fighting for universal suffrage. She was protesting that wealthy land owning educated women had more right to vote than working class men.

I'm basically with you on this one. If it's a private club, then the right to freely associate trumps all. If big corporations have a problem with Augusta National and other clubs being men-only, then they can boycott the club if it's not willing to change. The reality is that prestigious golf clubs have long been active hubs for corporate networking, and that (along with the prestige value) accounts for the bulk of the requests to join Augusta. This has in turn helped to build and maintain the mystique that surrounds Augusta National, to the benefit of the club and its membership. If they want to take a stand about not admitting female members, then let them weigh up the pros and cons for themselves.

There are not only plenty of women-only clubs and organizations, but also for just about any other minority/disadvantaged group you can think of.

Well exactly. Augusta National would still remain a club for rich and powerful executives and politicians. I've probably a better chance of getting into space than being invited to join Augusta National. As far as I know, Richard Branson isn't a snob about who takes his space flights. If you can cobble together the money, are in good health and can afford to wait in the queue, then you're on the list.

They aren't supported by public funds, they should have the freedom make whatever dumbass rules they like. No women? Puh-lease. I wouldn't join a club where there were no women. Wtf.

I might join a golf club that didn't allow women. It's annoying when they slow the course down...

What to want?

Equality!

When do we want it?

Now! But, excuse me I am off to the Ladies tee to drive this ball 200 yards. See you in an hour.

Speaking of Ladies Tees -- does Augusta even have them? I would doubt it.

Would they have to install them, or would they make the IBM CEO hit from the blues, and land in the muck every time?

LOL, and then Gloria Allred would take the podium to announce a lawsuit to force Augusta National to reorganize the discriminatory golf course.... :{D

Any IBM CEO past or present should be forced to play from the blue tees. :demon:

Seriously: I'm sure whatever forward tees they have would suffice. After all, women do play there as is, just not as members.

The important questions would be along the lines of ... should they be let into the Butler cabin? :mob:
