I do not
believe these people! You can't make this stuff up...
A law firm with ties to the California GOP is deeply bothered to see Mexican-American Jose Hernandez’s name on the ballot for U.S. Congress ... because he has listed himself as “astronaut” on the line for his occupation. Hernandez ... is a recently retired astronaut... This means that Hernandez is CHEATING, by describing himself according to his career accomplishments over the span of more than say, the last week. ...
The Fresno Bee reports:
In a pointed new challenge, a Sacramento law firm is asking a judge to block Hernandez from describing himself as an “astronaut/scientist/engineer” on the June ballot. The lawsuit notes Hernandez has left NASA.
“Hernandez’s attempted use of ‘astronaut’ violates the Election Code’s unambiguous requirement that a candidate’s ballot designation reflect one’s current profession, vocation, or one held during the previous calendar year,” the lawsuit states. ...

Point of order for our legal friends: NASA is not the only game in town you know.
And an astronaut does not necessarily need to have recently been in space, or be scheduled to take a flight in the near future. By that logic, many well-known astronauts wouldn't have been able to call themselves thus for considerable periods between space flights.

I should list "killer" in my CV to see if there's any complaints.

Astronaut emeritus.

[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Do John Glenn's classmates have to stop calling themselves astronauts?

Although oddly enough, in order to be a successful politician, you usually need to be a good actor.
And a liar.

It goes without saying that if the recently retired astronaut was of the an all-American variety, and a Republican, then this complaint would never see the light of day.

Not all of them. I know a few off forum who definitely aren't Republicans - and just look at Zilla.

The demographics of the US military reflects the general population. There is no preponderance of one party over any other.

And there was that one US presidential candidate back in 2004.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
