What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Do you have a road going to your property? Will the fire department or cops come if needed? Sewage, water, trash collection?andrewclunn wrote:My hatred of religion is only slightly eclipsed by the bullshit that are property taxes. You never own your property, you're merely renting from the state.
Re: Catholic Church to pay Taxes :O
I don't own property. Buying land in New York is foolish as you pay about as much in taxes as people in other states pay in rent. I just rent because property is such a money pit of an investment.Robert_S wrote:Who but the state and your guns make sure that other people respect your property?andrewclunn wrote:My hatred of religion is only slightly eclipsed by the bullshit that are property taxes. It is to be noted that the surface area of the earth is something that cannot be claimed to have been created through human labor. To that extent, a land tax is more justifiable than most or all other kinds of taxes.andrewclunn wrote:My hatred of religion is only slightly eclipsed by the bullshit that are property taxes. "If the idea catches fire, it will be Atheists setting fire to churches...and the parishoners inside them...soon enough. We don't tax churches not because it's unconstitutional to do so, but because taxation has historically been the primary method for government (often religious government) to oppress disfavored religions and destroy them and we as a nation have eschewed that blunt-force instrument of religious (or atheistic) repression because of the great evil that always proceeds from interfering with the free exercise of religion by all, particularly when performed by government using the Mace of State as its weapon of choice."

Except that this measure just returns the law to where it was pre-2005.Seth wrote:If the idea catches fire, it will be Atheists setting fire to churches...and the parishoners inside them...soon enough.Warren Dew wrote:Now if the idea will catch fire and extend quickly around the world. That seems to be completely arse-backwards to me. Renting is pissing money away, especially when rent and mortgage payments are roughly equivalent.andrewclunn wrote:I just rent because property is such a money pit of an investment.

Seth,
We are clearly coming from different places here, but I am curious, what would be the ideal standards (in your opinion) for determining whether an organization should be taxed for its property or not?

I suspect rent and mortgage payments aren't roughly equivalent where he lives. Certainly they aren't where I live.Pappa wrote:That seems to be completely arse-backwards to me. Firstly the Vatican is a fucking bullshit parody state, not deserving of the name. And Secondly, what does whether you call it a state or not have to do with whether it pays taxes on it's property in Italy?Seth wrote:Is the Vatican (being a sovereign state) a signatory to the EU?

Re: Catholic Church to pay Taxes :O
Not according to Italy and 177 other nations who recognize the Vatican as a sovereign entity. And Vatican City is "a permanent observer of the UN in the category of "Non-member State" and a member of the IAEA, ITU, UPU, and WIPO."Pappa wrote:No. And it's status as a sovereign state is pretty ambiguous too.Seth wrote:Is the Vatican (being a sovereign state) a signatory to the EU?
Not ambiguous at all I'd say.

Not at all, it's officially recognized by 178 nations and is a "non-member observer" at the UN, although I'm sure you'd like it to be classified as an organized crime or terrorist network based on your mindless, bigoted hatred of all things Catholic.MrJonno wrote:The Vatican is a state in the same way the Mafia or Al Queda is.
Still, your analogy the delusional one and reality intrudes.

If your state is not a member of the EU, the EU has no taxing authority over your state, and the EU has no taxing authority over the Vatican.Seraph wrote:Besides, since when does not being a signatory to the EU constitute eligibility for EU tax exemption?Pappa wrote:No. And it's status as a sovereign state is pretty ambiguous too.Seth wrote:Is the Vatican (being a sovereign state) a signatory to the EU?

A sovereign country paying taxes to another?
