Recent generations focus more on fame, money than giving back

Young adults less interested in community issues, politics and environment, finds new research

WASHINGTON – The times are changing, and not necessarily for the better when it comes to giving back to society, according to 40 years of research on 9 million young adults. Since the baby boomer generation, there has been a significant decline among young Americans in political participation, concern for others and interest in saving the environment, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association.

"Popular views of the millennial generation, born in the 1980s and 1990s, as more caring, community-oriented and politically engaged than previous generations are largely incorrect, particularly when compared to baby boomers and Generation X at the same age," said the study's lead author, Jean Twenge, PhD, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book, "Generation Me." "These data show that recent generations are less likely to embrace community mindedness and are focusing more on money, image and fame." The study was published online this month in APA's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Modern society no longer provides a framework for leading a satisfying life and improving one's lot. When you don't have excedent you can do without without excessive pain, or are just resentful of an environment where you have been pushed down, you don't feel like giving back.

Plus, the young are maybe not grownup enough to see what grounds they have to want to give back, or what they could do to that effect.

I think it is just the case that most people (not just the young) have twigged (whether consciously or not) that there is no point in adding to the pot of society as what you put in will not actually help to grow / improve society, as your efforts will be stolen / pissed up against a wall.

A warm fluffy feeling only lasts so long.

I've heard that China with the one child policy has raised a generation of spoiled brats.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I agree. Even my own kids. Nothing.

I was always, since I can remember, looking for ways to help the underdog, looking for a way to make a change in the world ,etc...I wonder sometimes where have I gone wrong with them.

Also, this generation is huge with "trust fund" adults who know nothing about struggles in life except trying to find a good pair of shoes.

I blame the pundits on the political right.

They have supplied justifications for greed for decades now. The working poor are dependent leeches in their view while those adept at skimming off the profits are the great.

For the good of society I think we need to start culling libertarians.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

No, more like history. But writing speeches is like writing a column. So you have to use mostly facts.

Considering what the baby boomers did to politics, the environment, and communities, can this be anything but a good thing?
