Actually, the "blues" grew out of "Negro spirituals".
but would the negroes have the spiritual blues if there hadn't been mississippi conservatives?
There's a rape analogy in there somewhere.

They're just sore because they lost the war.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Your question is in semi-jest I am sure, but the truth is I find myself still amazed that the richest country in the world (still - on an individual income basis) with so much about it to admire (still!) can still surprise me with levels of crass ignorance and stupidity, despite the fact that I know very well those levels of ignorance and stupidity are rather too common all over the world..but oddly sometimes more so it seems there.
Well, when imperialist European powers use your country as a dumping ground for slavery, criminals, mercenaries, and religious wackos, it tends to leave a mark, unfortunately.

I suppose I should chime in, since I lived the first 20-something years of my life in that state. The people interviewed in the OP video are pretty representative of the opinions, reasoning skills and dental health you'll find among the poor and un(der)educated population of MS. And that's a large chunk of the population. However, there are university towns where those opinions do not prevail, and there are well-educated professionals, mostly in the larger cities, who reject such conservatism. But they have to be quiet about it. :ddpan:

That's what happens when you have a country this large, Rum. Too much open space. Too much room for stupidity to creep in and fester.

I would trade some stupidity for some space! Space is one reason I moved to Cumbria. We have more than anywhere else in England...which isn't saying a lot!

We drove from Albuquerque to St. Loser, 1152 miles, and except for the cities we saw almost nobody. Space, we have it. :relax:

We'd have gone straight to the funk.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Face it, you can find doppelgangers of these guys in any poor, backward part of the world.

The good news is that Mississippi ranks as an "also voted" state when it comes to national elections.

:this: It is not a state for someone who is out-spoken as a liberal - or as an atheist. Conservatives hold a lot of power in the state. For many people, the only reason to have universities is because of football.

A year or so before I left the state I got involved with an atheist group. Once we outgrew meeting at someone's house, getting together became a problem. We simply couldn't meet in public as an atheist group because people could lose their jobs. When I left, we were meeting in an art studio owned by the friend of one group's members.

So, they weren't cherry picked then. Thanks for confirming that.

Yup, just watch farm animals and you learn the philosophy: you can't get something from nothing.
