Yep, I suspect that finding enough genetic material for this to be more than a one off performance (and gratuitous) will be rather difficult, given the state of decay most mammoths are in.
This is, of course, assuming we are dealing with a serious endeavour rather than a hollow publicity stunt by a "scientist" with an already tainted record.

Reckon you've to got to make sure there is a viable habitat AND a valid environmental niche for the brutes before you recreate them. If you are just going to have them as a tourist attraction in a zoo, that's a bit naff, IMO.

Battery fed mammoths are happier than the extinct ones. Ask them? :smoke:

Probably, but they should have plenty of relatively diverse samples given all the frozen carcasses.

We can use frog DNA to fill in the gaps.

I know I'm big but that's not reason to call me a mammoth

Let's stick to elephant DNA. I don't want to give the gays any more ammunition with spontaneously sex changing mastodons.

Cheetahs are thought to have gone thropugh a population bottleneck of just 7 individuals about 10,000 years ago.

Has this ever been done, on a frozen species of any sort?
It seems a bit ambitious to go straight to mammoth. But maybe they've got bigger eggs etc.
Elephants seem to have big everything else.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

You have to factor in the Woo Factor. Mammoths are much cooler than 1,000,000 year old mice, when it comes to funding anyway.
