I sing this song regularly.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Your question is in semi-jest I am sure, but the truth is I find myself still amazed that the richest country in the world (still - on an individual income basis) with so much about it to admire (still!) can still surprise me with levels of crass ignorance and stupidity, despite the fact that I know very well those levels of ignorance and stupidity are rather too common all over the world..but oddly sometimes more so it seems there.

Not cherry picked? I don't believe that for a second.
Speaking of cherry picking, do you know of any negro town/city/society/country that has amounted to anything? :prof:
Washington DC?

Well, there have been theories according to which much of the individually accumulated wealth in that country owed something to carefully cultivating the ignorance and stupidity you refer to.

One of the remarkable things that internet forums like this has allowed me to realize is that I have more in common with the average Brit than the average southern American.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Actually, the "blues" grew out of "Negro spirituals".
