Both are misleading, but the second is pretty much a lie.
Just because people use it all the time, that doesn't change the fact. People use the second phrase when the result was what they wanted.

If 35% voted for something, it's a lie to say "the scottish people" voted for it.
"a majority" is honest. "the scottish people" is not.
Hmm, I think you are trying very hard to create nuance where none exists.

I didn't vote for Cameron or the Liberals. I don't like it being implied that I did.
I wasnt implying you did, if my post suggested that it wasn't intended. I said "The last one which you agreed with perhaps?". I wasnt suggesting that was the 2010 election, but the last result you agreed with.
Sorry, I didn't actually mean your post, when I wrote that.
I was just saying that if someone says that the UK people voted for the coalition, I don't like them including me in that.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

We could sell the defunct Yankee bases to Tescos and I wouldn't have to tweet subversive messages every time I drove near Menwith Hill

Yet somehow I think you still would.

Don't you have some African colonies to exploit? If you stole some more resources from indigenous peoples, then you'd be back to better shape. Or, you could sell the Elgin Marbles and Egyptian relics on Ebay and make an extra buck.

Don't you have some African colonies to exploit?
It's easier to sub-contract that to the Chinese these days

The funny thing is the Chinese bring in their own labor,
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I was actually thinking its the Chinese who 'exploit' Africa these days
