Review The Last Movie You Saw in a Movie Theater

Post by Coito ergo sum » Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:15 pm

I just saw Wanderlust over the weekend.

This was a bland, milquetoast non-romantic, romantic comedy that appears to have been rated "R" unnecessarily. The humor is entertaining and the acting is sufficient. It will not win any awards, but for fans of Jennifer Aniston and/or for people looking for a light comedy that does not require much thought, this is your movie. It is good for a date, because it provides enough laughs to be pleasant, and a few scenes to base some post-movie discussion on.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best and 5 being exactly average, I would give it a 6. On an academic grade scale, I would give it a B minus.

Plot spoilers in the below spoiler:
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
The movie involves a married couple who are looking for an apartment. They decide to overpay for a an efficiency apartment in Greenwich Village. They overpay, and immediately after signing the papers, they both lose their jobs. They decide to leave New York and move to Atlanta, where the male lead's brother lives in a giant house. The male lead can work for his brother's port-a-potty rental company.

On the way to Atlanta, they decide to stay the night in a hotel. To conserve money, they pick a rustic place that turns out to be a hippie commune kind of thing. When heading down the road to the commune place, their first experience with it is a naked guy jogging. This is the first funny scene in the movie because the guy has like a weird, non-in-shape man-body that is just funny looking to start out with -- they take advantage of the "naked guy running" humor motif. They attached a large prosthetic penis to the naked man to add to the humorous effect by having him sport an oversized wang.

They flip their car trying to get away from naked guy, and they end up spending the night there. The place is funny, because they have no doors and everyone acts all hippie-weird. They stay a couple of days and then their car is fixed, so they can proceed to Atlanta. They go to Atlanta and the brother is a total dickhead wackjob. There are some funny lines from his wife, who plainly is miserable with her asshole husband who thinks it is funny to say insulting things all the time. He's just a creep.

It turns out, due to the creepy brother, they get in a fight with him and decide to pack up and leave. The male lead decides he would like to try to stay at the hippie commune and give it a shot. Jennifer Aniston is resistant, but agrees to try it. She ends up liking the commune, though, and wants to stay there forever, whereas the male lead, Paul Rudd, decides he would like to get another job.

One of the commune members, name of Seth, incidentally, takes a liking to Jennifer Aniston - as any heterosexual male is wont to do - and proceeds to horn in on her. He convinces them that it is an open sex commune. A hot blonde commune member is hitting on Paul Rudd too. Jennifer Aniston winds up sleeping with Seth, and Rudd gets upset when he finds out. They decide that he must sleep with the blonde, but he screws that up by acting like an idiot. It's kind of funny.

Ultimately, it turns out that Seth wants to try to make a buck by selling the deed to the commune to investors and then moving away to Miami with Jennifer Aniston. His plot is discovered and foiled. However, at one point, Aniston takes her top off while news cameras are rolling in order to create a firestorm of attention for the commune. Unfortunately, in a rated R movie, they pixellate Aniston's breasts and we don't see them.

There are some outtakes at the end of the movie which are funnier than anything in the actual movie.
