Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

I was looking for a news story that was claimed to be the source for that quote. Turns out it was a chimera.Warren Dew wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_TreGawdzilla wrote:I once spent an entire day going through the NYT ("source" for that quote) without finding the article it supposed came from. Ah, you mean the source that Peter Arnett never revealed? I'm not claiming that he quoted accurately, just that it was an accurate description of Johnson's management of the war.Gawdzilla wrote:It's the source for the AP story that is in doubt.

Maybe so. The war I saw didn't match up very well with the accounts I've read, but maybe I saw things they didn't.Warren Dew wrote:Ah, you mean the source that Peter Arnett never revealed? Well, that's a decision he doesn't need to make. So you'll never know.Warren Dew wrote:In other words, Obama is willing to sacrifice hundreds or thousands of lives to get reelected. Great.mistermack wrote:His priorities are not your priorities, you don't seem to be able to understand that.
But George W did do exactly that.
The numbers being sacrificed on Obamas watch are tiny in comparison. And who can tell whether staying causes more deaths than leaving?
The main thing is that Obama had no choice. Bush did.

Actually Obama has racked up almost twice as many fatal casualties in Afghanistan in less than half as many years as Bush:mistermack wrote:The numbers being sacrificed on Obamas watch are tiny in comparison.

If you include Iraq, the total number of casualties per year under Obama has been roughly the same as under Bush.
Obama had no trouble pulling out of Iraq. He could easily have done the same in Afghanistan. Instead, he chose to escalate.

Re: we're fighting for the women?
So, the US no longer has any military or contract personal in Iraq? What did they do with all the military bases? Were they handed over to the Iraqi government? I've heard about this "pulling out" but find it kind of hard to believe there are no more americans in Iraq.Warren Dew wrote:Obama had no trouble pulling out of Iraq.
got to keep those military contracters happy.Warren Dew wrote:He could easily have done the same in Afghanistan. Instead, he chose to escalate.

You seem to be trying to re-write history, putting Obama on equal blame terms with Bush.Warren Dew wrote:Actually Obama has racked up almost twice as many fatal casualties in Afghanistan in less than half as many years as Bush:mistermack wrote:The numbers being sacrificed on Obamas watch are tiny in comparison.

It's frankly ridiculous.
Both wars are George Bush's wars.
Was Rommel responsible for WW2?
The people who started it are totally to blame for it's consequences.
Obama is doing the best he can for the USA, facing shit choices whether the US stays or runs.
You must REALLY love George Bush, to be so blatantly bending history for him.
At least somebody loves him.

You mean that Peter Arnett was lying or that someone at Associated Press made the story up and attributed it to him? Whether you call the quote a fiction or a chimera, that is the inescapable drift, isn't it?Gawdzilla wrote:It's the source for the AP story that is in doubt.Warren Dew wrote:The image on this page looks genuine:

Re: we're fighting for the women?
It's been over a decade since I looked into it, and that was for a professor at some Washington-area college. We batted the thing around for about a week before she issued a "sound bite" alert to VWAR-L.Seraph wrote:You mean that Peter Arnett was lying or that someone at Associated Press made the story up and attributed it to him? Re: we're fighting for the women?
My direct involvement was to search NYT for an article that was claimed to be the source for the whole smear. It didn't exist. I look at NYT for a month in either direction to confirm this. I then reported to Kali Tal, who combined that information with her other research and announced the sound bite. Her report looked thorough and comprehensive to me.Seraph wrote:So, was Peter Arnett or someone else lying, or what do you mean to say by referring to the quote as a fiction?Gawdzilla wrote:It's been over a decade since I looked into it, and that was for a professor at some Washington-area college.
