This wouldn't have happened under Khadaffi?

They are less evolved than us Loz. You have to make allowances (after kicking them firmly in the balls first of course).

You also need to remember the colonial history of North Africa.

It didn't occur under Gadaffi, under all of his decades as dictator, and all the diplomatic feuds we went through with him.

That's not an answer to my question.

Yes, it is an answer, because it never occurred under Gadaffi.

That doesn't mean it couldn't have happened under him, just that it didn't happen under him.

But the situation could never have existed under him, because of his unapologetic approach to Islamists.

So we would be better off if he wasn't removed?

We would, not the Libyan people, but it would seem it's going rather more downhill in that part of the world.

Those graves are of the men who fought against Nazi tyranny, and on behalf of the Libyan people.

You do have a good point. To expand on it it seems to me that the 'west' is taking a giant gamble that by supporting the 'Arab Spring' movements we will not be forgotten when the Islamists get voted in.

We do tend to forget that each of these countries is as different as say Italy is to the UK and it will work through in each in its own way, but I have little doubt that there will at least initially be a backlash and the west will pay for supporting the likes of Qaddafi and other regimes we supported, however implicitly.

I am a great believer in 'progress' as embodied by the enlightenment. Oppression has not so far won in the longer term and the oppression that is fundamentalist Islam won't either..in the longer term.

I have some thoughts on what "in the longer term" entails between now and then, but that's a subject for another thread... :coffee:

It's time for the Italians to send the repo men and take possession back.
