Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
Re: Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
Times change. Not so long ago, who would've thought a black man could be elected President? Or openly gay members of Congress?

The problem to overcome is that anyone of prominence that would announce his atheism would be uniformly and vigorously attacked by the Christian right and the Catholic Church and ridden out of town on a rail.

How about a religious right type that deconverts while in office? That would be amazingCoito ergo sum wrote:We can but hope.Ian wrote:Times change. Not so long ago, who would've thought a black man could be elected President? Or openly gay members of Congress?

Let's just elect a Scientologist and be done with it.

There's a lot of talk about a White Knight coming in to rescue the GOP (and this talk will grow really loud if Romney loses Michigan), but I doubt Jeb Bush qualifies as a White Knight.
Anyway, it might be too late for one to get into the race:

The delegates don't have to vote for the winners of their respective primaries. At the convention they could bang heads together and choose someone else that wasn't on the ballot in any state. It's all covered in party by-law.Ian wrote:There's a lot of talk about a White Knight coming in to rescue the GOP (and this talk will grow really loud if Romney loses Michigan), but I doubt Jeb Bush qualifies as a White Knight.

Unless they chose someone like Michael Bloomberg, such a brokered convention would be a disaster. Bloomberg is much much too centrist for the Party rank n' file to choose at the last minute... though the party elite could probably settle for him.

Don't "white knights" have, erm, unhappy connotations in America?
Apropos of nothing: I like the "post bollocks" button, it kinda reminds me that everything I say doesn't matter a jot really.

Re: Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
This seems to have been going on for ages. When and how is it finally decided? Is there like a running poll for how well each candidate is doing?
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]
Re: Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
There's the delegate count, but those really aren't set in stone. If a brokered convention happens, some delegates won by some candidates may become more flexible.Psychoserenity wrote:This seems to have been going on for ages. When and how is it finally decided? The 2008 Democratic primaries weren't decided until much later in the spring. But this contest is far, far more negative than that one was. These candidates are bloodying each other up pretty bad.

Does anyone else recoil in horror at the ridiculous amounts of money thrown into these campaigns, never to be seen again? You're not anybody in a presidential candidate race unless you can attract enough money to remake Gone With The Wind - every week.

So that <*would be more of a red knight, except I'm having major problems reconciling the American visceral hatred for commies, and the fact that Elephants are red in America.Ian wrote:There's a lot of talk about a White Knight coming in to rescue the GOP (and this talk will grow really loud if Romney loses Michigan), but I doubt Jeb Bush qualifies as a White Knight.
