What type of Capitalist / Socialist are you?

I'm not really into this political stuff or don't feel informed enough to come down either way.

I'm a utilitarian socialist. I believe that central planning and a welfare state make society as a whole safer, wealthier, and more productive.

I'm a utilitarian capitalist. I believe that free trade and a reliance on personal responsibility lead to a safer, wealthier, and more productive society.

I'm a justice oriented socialist. I believe that people should only be held responsible for their own actions, not that of their parents, so a welfare state that helps give all children an equal opportunity at success is the only just way for society to function.

I'm a justice oriented capitalist. I believe that parents who are responsible should be able to give their child more opportunities than those who have more kids than they can afford. Inequality is not injustice, it will and should exist in any just society.

I'm a principled socialist. It's not about what's more efficient or trying to determine who deserves what. A society that sees caring for those in need as its moral obligation is a more moral society period.

I'm a principled capitalist. Individual property rights should not be compromised for anything. The needs of the many never justify using force against the few, even if that few is just one individual.

What type of Capitalist / Socialist are you?

Post by Drewish » Wed Feb 22, 2012 6:14 pm

This is just a simple poll to find out why people with various economic views hold those views and what it would take to change our / your minds. I think a lot of time is spent talking passed each other and I'm certainly bothered by all the, "People who don't agree with me must be heartless assholes / ignorant idiot!" stuff that gets thrown around. So don't think of this as a place to debate the issues, but just to share your personal reasoning behind your economic views.

Speaking personally, I am a justice oriented capitalist. I do not believe that all people are created equal and think that evolution and natural selection serve not only as biological truths, but as models for understanding how emergent human interaction. This probably stems from my coming from a poor background and achieving upward mobility through achievement based scholarships and working since I was nine years old. I believe in the "American Dream" where what you get out of life is what you put into it and that capitalism rewards those who have skills and work hard with success.

I'm not really looking for a response to what I believe. I want to know what you believe and why you think you believe it.
Nobody expects me...

Interesting set of choices. I am a hybrid of a number of the socialist options, mellowed over the last thirty years from being a pretty heavy duty socialist worker type, man the barricades and all that, to someone who hates to see the rich exploiting the poor and getting away with it. So to me fairness and justice are important as are the values associated with compassion for one's fellow human beings.

Probably a mixture of them as well but I will settle with whatever version Seth thinks is the most evil

I've been a union member all my life but I see too much union time and resources being spent defending losers and dog fuckers who should be booted out of the ranks. When I complained about this I was told that the only way a member could lose union status is for non-payment of dues! :cranky:

I would increase some freedoms and limit some. There has to be planning to use our resources. The current model is to consume all.

I have no time for these petty protestant heresies.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Amen, brother. I was raised in a union family and have seen them do some good work... but times have changed and the ones I've worked with are anachronisms and do nothing but waste their members' dues defending miscreants and losers and are completely unable to see shades of grey or manage expectations - management's ALWAYS wrong and the member (no matter how lazy, lying, or averse to doing what they're paid for they are) is ALWAYS a victim. Judging from the duplicitous and obnoxious union reps I've encountered I pretty much despise the whole system.

Not that I have strong feelings or anything... :pardon: :shifty:

Unions are merely tools which humans use to achieve aims and they can be as ruinous to society as any financial trading corporation.

I had to work as scab in two strikes to keep my job. Both times they gained very little. The work was a nice change from routine, but the hours stink, long shifts.

But I don't see that they have choice. This is how they get credit for skills, experience. Seniority is an outdated concept, thoug.
