That doesn't make it right. Spending less on transport is better for the economy and better for people in general, because making it more expensive to go to work hurts the lower and middle classes the most.MrJonno wrote:Plenty of people spend way more than that on transport to work in the UK whether its public or private transport.Psychoserenity wrote:Do you drive a tank? Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
British cars get good mileage, then? Minicooper gets about 26 miles per gallon in town/city driving, and maybe 33 on the highway. Wow. Phenomenal -- much better than 25 MPG.Thinking Aloud wrote:He lives in the US. Car efficiency is in gallons per mile and not the other way around.Psychoserenity wrote:Do you drive a tank? Ours is usually between 37.9 (around town) and 51.1 (long-distance).Gawdzilla wrote:27.5 mpg.Thinking Aloud wrote:That's an outrageously poor fuel economy.Gawdzilla wrote:Ayaan drives ~45 miles one way, so about four gallons of gas. I'll pass on the Smartcar, or the 1.0 Liter Citroen C1.Thinking Aloud wrote:Ours is usually between 37.9 (around town) and 51.1 (long-distance).Gawdzilla wrote:27.5 mpg.Thinking Aloud wrote:That's an outrageously poor fuel economy.Gawdzilla wrote:Ayaan drives ~45 miles one way, so about four gallons of gas. Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
We don't even have that car in the US. They must measure something differently there because here the Ford Focus sedan, smaller than the above, doesn't get the gas mileage listed for the Focus Estate. I wonder why that is.
My friends in the industry, I recall, mentioned some time ago that vehicles for the American market have higher crash rating requirements which makes them install heavier materials, like side pillars and stuff. I'm not sure if I'm recalling that correctly. I may make a phone call and get the skinny on this.

Odd, because the most current (and supposedly most fuel-efficient) Ford Focus model in the states is stated to only get 28/40 max.

Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
Just in case anyone has missed it - there is a difference between US gallon and UK gallon (I assume these measurements are used for fuel in their respective countries) 1 UK gallon = 1.2 US gallon - which possibly makes up for some of the difference here, though not all of it.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

That's what I thought too. And, those figures never work out to be true. The mileage is always lower in practice.

The mileage I quoted was the average for a trip from St. Louis to Bowling Green and back, i.e., almost all highway miles.

Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
I don't see the material difference in a Ford Fusion or Taurus and perhaps a Ford Focus. What? 4 MPH difference? I don't see as we, in the US, have a 40 MPG option until we get to expensive hybrid versions and tiny little death traps, like the Smartcar and and some Hyundai tin can.Bella Fortuna wrote:I know!Coito ergo sum wrote:That's what I thought too.
