Thousands protest in Afghanistan over Nato 'Koran burning'


The US commander of international troops in Afghanistan has apologised and ordered an investigation after the reports surfaced.

Afghan officials said between 2,000 and 2,500 people demonstrated outside the air field after several locals themselves claimed to have seen the burned remains of the Islamic holy book while working inside the base.

It is thought that between 60 and 70 books used by detainees once incarcerated at the base were burned after being thrown out, including several Korans.

Protesters - some chanting 'die, die, foreigners' - brandished singed copies of the Koran as they demonstrated outside Bagram.

That's like a Torah scroll with a scribal error, it's not sacred and is improper for use. can be destroyed or recycled for materials.

Such devices do exist, and there are Koranic reader applications. There should be no issues with deleting it from what I understand, but i may be wrong with that one.

No, I'm pretty sure you are correct. I have read that it is not necessary to be in a state of wudu in order to read the Qur'an on a computer screen, though it would be required if you were reading a printed or handwritten copy of the Qur'an. So deleting part or all of an electronic version of the Qur'an should not be a problem, since such a version is considered to be a sequence of code that is in itself meaningless until it is converted into an image by software. A similar argument is sometimes used to suggest that electronic images of people and other living creatures are not covered by any prohibition on creating and keeping images.

Many of the downloadable versions of the Qur'an would not technically be considered as "the Qur'an" since they come with translations, notes, transliterations and recitations rather than being simply the Arabic text. I understand that a written text of the Qur'an is considered to be a mushaf (and hence subject to various practices of ritual purity and general etiquette relating to handling, storage and disposal) if and only if it consists of the complete text of the Qur'an in Arabic with essentially no other material - if it comes with notes or commentary, then it is strictly considered to be a tafsir.

Oh. Only a a Koran in Arabic is considered a real one. Phew!

My English edition, like most of my books before I got a bookshelf (from IKEA), had been kicked up and down the room being just flung on the ground before for eventually being puked on after a drunken night I had too much spirits and went into a spin as I lay down in the dark causing me to throw up over the side of my bed. A few cds, dirty clothes and a Steven King book belonging to my friend got it too.

I threw it out.

How do you know? Arabic is the language of culture all over the Middle East, from Turkey to at least Iran, and Afghanistan is part of the Pesian sphere, so it probably is fairly common among the literati there.
I'd not be surprised if there were more Arabic Korans in Pakistan Alone than in the whole Arabic peninsula.

The obvious explanation is that when some True Believer hears about toasted Korans, they don't stop to enquire if they were in Arabic. In fact, they probably don't know about this loophole, and nor would they care even if they did.

Well, most of the population is multilingual, but only a quarter is literate.
Pashtun is not likely to be much used in writing, so the main written language is likely to be Dari/Persian, and I'd bet that many, if not most of those who read it also have Arabic.
