$20,000?

I would call the police.

I mean...there must be something smelly about it, if the dog is interested....

In the circumstance you set up, keeping it is the correct choice because turning it in is paramount to handing it over to someone else equally "undeserving" of it, probably the policemen themselves. It's a bit of fortunate luck coming your way, don't fuck it up.

More difficult - It's in a ladies handbag with her identification in her wallet. She lives in a huge mansion.
So you think luck being on your side you deserve it as much as anyone else, is that what your saying?

I'd look around very carefully - and pocket it

and then stake the place out for folk returning there (on the basis that anyone who put £20K in a bush probably has more).....then tail 'em to their secret hideout / lair and would rob them.

I'd hand it to the police without thinking.. about it.. too much, anyway. It would be more trouble than it's worth to me.

If the police gave it back after not finding the real owner, - I'd upgrade my computer, buy one or two other bit's and pieces, replace some worn out things, maybe keep an extra grand on top of what's spent in cash, and then probably give the rest to charity.

As for why I think that's the correct choice - it's only what's right for me, I wouldn't expect anyone to do the same or judge anyone for doing differently.

Call the police.

First, because I'm highly ethical, and in a society of law, that's the right thing to do. Second, because you don't know where the money came from. It could be stolen with known serial numbers, in which case attempting to deposit it in a bank might land you in the pokey. $20K isn't that hard to smurf, but still. And who knows, maybe it's a ransom drop, and the police are watching to see who picks it up. Or a drug dealer stashed it there, and they come around the corner and spot you making off with their money. You'd be totally dead.

Nope, call the police and let them handle it. Of course, if it ends up being unclaimed, I'd pay off my credit cards and invest in a few items like a newer car and computer, but $20K doesn't go that far these days.

Am I the only one in what's left of western Civilization that doesn't have credit card debt?

I know I'm often the only one in line at the convenience store who's going to pay for my $2.50 soda and snack with cash.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I keep thinking of "No Country for Old Men." No that it's THAT much money, but 20G doesn't wind up in a bag in the park without baddies being involved, and I don't want to invite that kind of energy into my life. I'd take it to the police, and I wouldn't count on them giving it back, even if it goes unclaimed-- one of them would probably take it in that case, anyway.

Oddlly enough, if it were $1000 or less, I'd pocket it, no question. If there were no name on it, that is. If I could identify the owner, I'd return it in any situation. Or try to, anyway.

I don't have any of that either... Debt free but dirt poor, 20 grand is about 2 years of my budget.

And I wouldn't have ethical qualms about pocketing the smaller amount, either. Why shouldn't I take it, and provide for my family, if it doesn't clearly belong to an identifiable other?
