I searched - I can't get a flight from here to there. Where do I have to go to fly to the Falklands?

The easiest way is to become a prince of the realm and learn to fly a search and rescue helicopter.

Whether you think his opinion has merit or not is another matter.
One of those opinions is that Sean Penn ought to keep his trap shut...

I get the distinct impression that Penn is trying to "act" like a statesman. He's got the look down -- swept back tough-guy hair, professional grey suit. And, he has his entourage schedule him in for meetings with dictators and fascist cronies. The extent of his opinions appear to be "if it involves the US or the UK, I take the other side's view of it..."

I've heard such a quite a bit. What is it, do you think, that it is pretending to be, bearing in mind it is a Terrance Malick film?

Well, if the title weren't already taken, I'd say A Heart-breaking Work of Staggering Genius. Possibly Life-Affirming, as well.

The google fu is weak in this one

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

I see and you don't think he can pull it off? I'm not certain myself since I've also not seen it, but I am a fan of his work, and I do think his stuff has a heft to it which leads me to suspect that it might be better than the trailers look. I guess it depends on your P.O.V. To me the most pretentious piece of crap (in that it seems to be trying to hard to be zany and emotional at the same time) I've ever seen advertised is this...

The entire cinema groaned at that.

Okay, Audley, I got a chance to watch that trailer, and yeah, I can see what you're getting at, but, based purely on previews, I'd take The Future over The Tree of Life any day of the week. The Future edges out Tree when it comes to saccharine life-affirmyness, but Tree still seems wayyyyy more pretentious.

Pretty sure my husband would flat out refuse to see either, but I could go see Future sometime when nothing else is playing with a friend who really enjoyed The Science of Sleep, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I think it's pretty clear the trailer is targeting that audience.)

But Paw-paw? I really like cats, and even I am :|~

Did your 20 years include water rationing? China needn't have sent anyone over the border. Once they had the new territories, they could have simply cut off food and water.

Now you see, I thought Eternal Sunshine was a fantastic movie, I don't think I've ever seen such a bleak romantic sci-fi movie. This is a massive derail, but have you seen any of Malick's work before? If not perhaps check out the "The Thin Red Line."

I will grant you that Malick, like Greenaway have aspirations of cinema as high art and that if you don't think that it can be, which may well be a fair point, then I can see why you would consider it a pretension rather than an aspiration. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but if it is crap, I'll definitely let you know you were right.

Oh, don't misunderstand me-- I loved Eternal Sunshine, and I liked Science of Sleep, too. I just think this Future film is trying to appeal to that audience: if you liked Eternal Sunshine, you'll loooooove The Future! Which is far from necessarily true.

I did see Thin Red Line-- though I didn't realize this was the same director. It wasn't my favorite, though I recognized that it was trying to do something interesting. That breathy inside-the-head voice... I know people who let that voice envelop them and take them someplace, but I got impatient with it.

I saw TRL in the theatre, whenever it came out, and haven't seen it since, so my impressions are patchy now. But... I think I remember calling it pretentious, too. But well made.

But I absolutely think cinema can be high art. I just saw that bit, and it's an important point. I need to go to bed, now, though it's tempting to try to think up examples of what I think hit the mark.

Yes. Big derail.

The Falklands. I don't really care about them. Sorry. I'm sure they're very nice.
