nothing new here really, the effects of fire have been understood for decades. there does seem to have been an increase in people woodburning though, as it's perceived as a better alternative to fossil fuels (although if you go on thegreen forums the carbon debate is open).

We have campfires 2-3 times a week. When I present I speak of how people heading west in the 1850s might have stopped in this very spot for the night, and sat around a fire telling stories. I remind people that many of these folks would have been just a few generations away from their European roots and they had brought their myths, legends and tall tales with them to this country. Including stories about wolves.

... and jesuses. Pretty much all of their stories were about wolves or jesuses.

Indeed i too think that wood fires are an inefficient and expensive way to keep yourself warm all the time. But to say like i do when its not fire ban season get out the fire pit and have a fire out the back of my place the pollution is miniscule (a good fire is a fire that doesn't smoke much at all) and everyone sits around talks to each other shares tall tales and has a few beverages. I think the benefits of practicing some old social skills and catching up with friends and family far outweights any negatives. Especially in 'zilla case he is exposing kidlets to the outdoors in a way that many parents can't be arsed doing (It took me to go on some program for at-rish youth run by a local charity to get the outdoor bug) the benefit are tenfold more.

My great-grandma had a cat that used to get too close to the fireplace and started smoking.

My cat is fucking weird wont go near our fire pit however as sam harris would approve of she plonks her arse right next to the gas heater or the aircon when mum has it on warms as the cat would think.

Fortunately, I'm open minded enough to have bought a house without a fireplace. Of course, that was 20 years before I read this, so maybe it wasn't open mindedness - just the ability to figure out the obvious for myself.

I do see a lot of excuses for wood fires in this thread ... guess Harris has a lot of friends here.

We had a very large campfire last night. It was flippin' cold out in the woods. I kept the spiel short so they could get on with and come back for hot cocoa and cookies.
