When you vote for the Dail, you essentially got a choice between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael ... voting for the Aran Independance Party makes little sense.

I'm not much of a Socialist and wouldn't want them in charge but our local representative gets shit done so I'll let her have a seat.
There's also Sínn Fein.

The welfare reform that was enacted under Clinton was a conservative reform, which liberals generally opposed, and the fiscal responsibility started with the Republican Revolution in Congress in 1994 -- the taxing and spending power being Congressional.amused wrote:Clinton = Balanced budget and welfare reform during his presidency. But, in reality, there wasn't really a balanced budget under Clinton anyway. It's smoke and mirrors -- if someone thinks the budget was actually balanced, please link to a government source showing the year in which the total public debt was smaller than it was the year before.

And compared to Shrub, the Clinton years were at the very least, fiscally responsible.

And specifically, it happened with the Congress under Gingrich. Clinton vetoed welfare reform twice.Coito ergo sum wrote:The welfare reform that was enacted under Clinton was a conservative reform, which liberals generally opposed, and the fiscal responsibility started with the Republican Revolution in Congress in 1994 -- the taxing and spending power being Congressional.

Actually the Bush deficits were not that large either until the Democrats gained control of the house of representatives in 2007, and they didn't skyrocket until FY2009, which Bush passed but which Obama added the stimulus bill and the GM & Chrysler bailouts to:amused wrote:And compared to Shrub, the Clinton years were at the very least, fiscally responsible.

Latest polls have Gingrich leading Romney by nearly 10 points nationally, but Romney leading Gingrich by nearly 10 points in Florida.

Re: Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
And, the good Clinton years were under a Republican Congress and Newt's contract with America, that achieved the relatively nearly balanced budget. That balanced budget was smoke and mirrors anyway, as it really wasn't balanced and the total national debt went up every year under Clinton as it did under Bush and now under Obama, and Obama is setting the new record. By the end of his last fiscal year, he's on pace to have increased the debt more than Bush did in 8. So, if one's complaint is with Shrub budget deficits, one ought have a huge issue with Obamalamadingdong.Warren Dew wrote:Actually the Bush deficits were not that large either until the Democrats gained control of the house of representatives in 2007, and they didn't skyrocket until FY2009, which Bush passed but which Obama added the stimulus bill and the GM & Chrysler bailouts to:amused wrote:And compared to Shrub, the Clinton years were at the very least, fiscally responsible.

I think we agree, but were using different terms. I use the words "national debt" for the debt they said went to 0, and public debt to be the total debt. But, the point is the same.Warren Dew wrote:And specifically, it happened with the Congress under Gingrich. Re: Predictions: Who will be the GOP Candidate?
They weren't fiscally responsible. They had the advantage of monumental increases in revenue due to an expansion in the US economy that was unprecedented. The fiscal responsibility of the government was non-existent, and was merely given cover because those were the years of the rise of Apple, Microsoft, and all the new computer companies, software company explosions, telecommunications expansion, etc. The evil corporations were very successful and employed a lot of people and produced a lot of product.amused wrote:But the president still gets all the blame and credit for whatever happens during his/her presidency.Coito ergo sum wrote:The welfare reform that was enacted under Clinton was a conservative reform, which liberals generally opposed, and the fiscal responsibility started with the Republican Revolution in Congress in 1994 -- the taxing and spending power being Congressional.amused wrote:Clinton = Balanced budget and welfare reform during his presidency. To say that because the private sector raises money fast enough to pay for government largesse in no way makes what the government did "fiscally responsible."
That being said - the President does get the blame and the credit, and that's a big problem. People are idiots, and they're starting to want the President to figure out what to do about their mortgage payment, send a guy around to fix the sink, and rub their shoulders a little and say "there there."
