Yes.

But the Iranians wouldn't care. Artillery easy to replace / stockpile.....the men are expendable........and a salvo (or 3?) from 50 guns onshore won't need to be accurate to the nearest inch. Might not sink the Carrier - but pretty hard to miss......
You have no idea how this would play out, do you?
Crumple does. The ship will sink. The age of large ships like large cars is over. The rules of the game change. The age of missiles and clever tricks is here. :crumple:

Well, even the USA would not be dumb enough to go Nuclear over something like this - sets a precedent that Nuking folk over small conflicts is OK (or only to cover embarrasment). And that would come back to bite USA on the bum.

Gotta stop thinking in the Western mindset of what constitutes a victory - the USA won't be invading and even if they did couldn't hold Iran (The only way is killing every man, woman and child - and litteraly flattening every city, town and village - I am not personally against that - don't hear a peep from Carthage nowadays  ), therefore the most the USA could hope to acheive is "Regime Change" (with no guarantee that the new (or a later) regime won't be as equally hostile).......and no matter what PR spin is applied to that, it's still not a Win for the USA. Iran will still be your enemy (even if they lie to you that not the case) and the people not only undefeated but with another couple of generations worth of hatred (a culture going back several thousand years does not forget the past - unlike some newer countries). The only people who may fear the USA is the leadership - and no guarantee that they won't be prepared to suffer the consequences for the greater good / longer term interests of their country.

Most in the USA probably don't realise that in an Iran war they would mainly be fighting......the Chinese. and the Chinese would not even be present, nor firing a shot!

USA is broke - an Iran war would cripple the USA beyond recovery (touch and go at the moment)....Chinese must be sitting in Beijiing with fingers crossed - and giggling :hehe: ....besides, USA just spent a decade or so losing 2 wars against 3rd world peasants demonstrating that they can't win wars - and becoming a laughing stock. Wining all the battles does not a Victory make.

Having said all that, would be a good idea for the USA to have a war - and win it. But for that gotta pick on something far easier than Iran. Maybe Grenada is getting a bit uppity again? :hehe:

Some of you think we're just going to sail a carrier through the Straits without back-up. :fp: The USN and USAF will be open when this comes down. It won't be one big fat target waddling through the area by herself.

If we deploy the carriers to the Caribbean, yes. :hehe:

(klr, Ian, 1-2 others will "get" that.)

It's gotta be quick and even then you'll see chaos from a oil spike like none the world as ever seen. If they can draw the US into even a limited couple of months conflict, shutting the gulf exports, the consequences on external economic factors will mean the dollar as a reserve courrency is finished, along with America as a global power. It's a trap of another kind. Technology is giving you a false sense of security. :smoke:

China will be interested to see if their anti-carrier ballistic missile works, may "accidentally" leave on on the baggage carousel at Tehran airport..

Hmm...Iran has something of its own...
In February 2011, Iran demonstrated a short-range anti-ship ballistic missile named Khalij Fars ( English: Persian Gulf ), a missile based on the Fateh-110 which successfully hit a stationary target vessel. It has been reported as a short ranged ballistic missile, and is based on the Dongfeng 11 missile with a range of 250-300 km.[14]

I've sailed the Gulf, the first time while Reagan lay bleeding in the back of a limo. We conduct "freedom of navigation" exercises routinely, and this area is one we've been expecting trouble in for at least 30 years. We will be ready.

A spike in oil prices would be a good thing. It would spur alternate energy development and create the political will to do so. OPEC knows this and would likely try to hold prices down by increasing supply to cover the spike. US foreign policy in the middle east is all about playing the players off against each other.

Wonder if we'll see the creation of OSPEC in the future, Organisation of Solar Power Exporting Countries, that'll try to hold the word to ransom by occasionally holding umbrellas over their solar panels?

I'm tempted to weigh in on this thread, but there's too much weird in here. There's some folks talking about geopolitics and military matters on the level of Cliff Claven in Cheers.

I'm feeling especially snooty and aloof today. :hmph:
