Victim kills teen robber on trail in PA

A 65-year-old man shot two teens, one fatally, as they tried to rob him Wednesday morning on a trail near the Schuylkill River, police said.

According to investigators:

The man was riding his bicycle on the trail near the Bertolet Fishing Dock at South First Avenue and Chestnut Street in West Reading.

The teens knocked the man off his bicycle, and two of them assaulted him.

The man pulled out a handgun and shot them both.

No, if you pull it, shoot for center mass for the purpose of rendering the attacker incapable of continuing the behavior that justified your shooting him in the first place. Never, ever say (or even think) you're shooting another human "to kill" him. You're always just engaging in lawful self defense to incapacitate him. The fact that two to the chest and one to the head will permanently and irrevocably totally incapacitate him to death is not relevant.

Good thinking. "I was trying to stop him" sounds a lot better to a judge than "I was trying to kill him."

I notice in the details of the event, the kids knocked him off his bike and started assaulting him. It doesn't say they were trying to rob him. Unless the surviving teen confessed to that afterwards, that's a hasty conclusion. They could've been kicking the shit out of the old guy just for fun.
