What gets me is that he was probably a perfectly normal human from birth to early childhood. Why does the same brainwashing take such staunch hold on some and not on others? His first wife (one of the victims) and various other adults of the same generation and from the same background managed to shake it off. Barring, of course, some sort of amazing revelation that proves them not guilty, after all, his co-accused second wife (slightly younger) also remained brainwashed, while some of their relatives didn't (fatally so, alas, considering they dismissed the possibility of the clan going primitive).

Of the next generation, intuition would suggest the youngest victim, being 13, might have had more influences from her new environment, but the two older girls were 19 & 17, were on par generationally with the third co-accused, the brother, who was 20. The three must by all logic have had the same influences at about the same ages, yet one remained brainwashed and two didn't.

It's really difficult for me to figure out why some break free and some don't.

Stephen Slevin was arrested in August of 2005 for driving while intoxicated, according to NBC station KOB.com. He said he never got a trial and spent the entire time languishing in solitary, even pulling his own tooth when he was denied dental care.

"'[Prison officials were] walking by me every day, watching me deteriorate," he said. "Day after day after day, they did nothing, nothing at all, to get me any help."

Slevin said he made countless requests to see a doctor to get medication for his depression, but wasn't allowed to see one until only a few weeks before his release. He also never got to see a judge.
