Just sinking a nimitz class aircraft carrier or two should do it - they are sitting targets with todays missiles.

Well, they have 2 to aim at, Vinson and Lincoln (pictured) but they aren't a vulnerable as you seem to think, fag packet mines or missiles, you don't sit 90 aircraft next door to your enemy's port unless you can defend them.

Current Iranian military posture indicates they may use unclear weapons against the Carrier Battle Groups.

Maybe that's more for Ian... but do the experts think they actually have reliably functional warheads? (I assume they don't need to develop special vehicles to carry those to such a short range)

Don't know what the latest versions of the Exocet are like but I bet even one would make a mess of a Nimitz if it got through. Wouldn't sink it but could make it need a major refit...

Technically, an exocet's design is to disable frigate size ships... using one on a carrier still would be using .303 for elephant shooting.

Technically, an exocet's design is to disable frigate size ships... using one on a carrier still would be using .303 for elephant shooting.

I still reckon it would do enough damage to make the carrier have to withdraw for repairs. Depends where it hit. If it hit the bridge....

It wouldn't. Those things fly low, and Aircraft carriers are insanely high above the water... and the bridge is in the conning tower.
