As much as I think it's almost certain to be Romney, there's a little voice in my head which keeps whispering "Newt... It could still be Newt..."

After the SC primary, I'll decide whether that voice is worth listening to or not.

It will be Romney.
I might even vote for him. :coffee:

Maybe.

This is the same woman who started an affair with Gingrich while he was still married to his first wife, right? Live by the sword, die by the sword, I say.

As long as it's between a man and a woman, it's nobody else's business.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Isn't Romney a Mormon or something? I'd find it hard to vote for someone capable of believing in such extreme ideas...

To a degree, yes. However, it depends on the conduct. If it's true that he was not only having an affair, but bringing the other woman home and fucking her in the marriage bed, calling his wife at home and saying "I love you" while the other woman was listening, banging on for years while lying about it, and then breaking up with one's spouse weeks or a a few months after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis...to me, that reveals a certain narcissistic coldness and callousness that is unbecoming. It's not the fucking, but the attitude and how he treats people, that is most of a concern to me. But, I don't know what is true right now. So far, he has issued a general denial. We're not clear what he admits and what he doesn't.

Also, he is in no position to moralize and talk about values and such. I don't want to hear him talk about declining values or morals, or start in on social conservatism. To that extent, I might prefer his brand of scumbag-ism to some other candidate's sanctimonious preaching and attempt to legislate in the bedroom.

Perhaps that voice is worth a listen after all:
Gingrich wins South Carolina primary
Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) -- Newt Gingrich has won Saturday's South Carolina GOP presidential primary, marking a stunning turnaround for a candidate who finished fourth in Iowa and New Hampshire and whose campaign had been left for dead -- again -- by observers just weeks ago.

With about 70% of polling places reporting, Gingrich had 40% of the vote, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney getting 27% and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum getting 18%. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas had 13%. Based on early returns and exit polls, CNN projected Gingrich the winner.

If the likes of a Gingrich can even get in the running, that is intself is proof that there is no god, or that any existing ones are not good.

I beg to differ. If Gingrich becomes the GOP nominee, I might very well start believing in a God. A Gingrich candidacy could be proof that he exists, cares about the election, and clearly wants Obama to win a landslide.

I may start agreeing with you if and only if Obie gets that landslide... and even then, keeping the lackluster rather than getting the evil is hardly proof of a loving higher power.

Gingrich's win in South Carolina shouldn't really be surprising - what's surprising is that Romney stayed on top in the polls there for so long.

Why did Romney do so well in New Hampshire? Because New Hampshire is the next state over from Romney's home state, Massachusetts.

Well, South Carolina is the next state over from Gingrich's home state, Georgia. Florida also borders on Georgia.

The one thing Romney should be concerned about is that southern states have more Republican delegates than northern states. Presumably that has long figured into his planning, though.

What will be interesting will be whether Santorum drops out.
