Dumb Apes?

This spy rock news story yesterday got me thinking. What technology might a advanced alien intelligence use to track and control human activities? Would we be able to spot such artifacts or cultural manipulations, or being so much less advanced be like dogs on a lead with no knowledge of our lead being a device of control. If we are just another dumb ape how do we know any of this technology we appear to have developed is actually of our doing? The scribblings of such unique individuals as Einstein could be the result of 'directive tools at the neuronal level' in the dumb rock of a apes brain? It is a wild idea but what if we are really really far dumber than we think? Our satisfaction at our superiority, our technical prowess and understanding, just an illusion of hormonal and hierachal ape ascendancy. Not that we are copying others of our kind who know what they are doing but rather we are being trained by others, not of our kind and not known to us and a million or more years in our advance, for purposes as yet unknown?

It would explain the explosion in advances of the previous couple of centuries after millions of years of gradual evolutionary progress? How do you explain this period of accelerated change?

They would take on the form of lowly rodents...mice...and manipulate us through our psychological experiments: go down the maze the wrong way, eat the wrong bit of cheese, unexpectedly drop dead of myxomatosis, etc.

Mostly, I think we are just a bunch of dumb apes. Most of our non-survival behaviours are probably linked more or less directly to evolutionary trait displaying, and we spend the vast majority of our time making decisions in an automatic/intuitive way.
