You are all envious of the queen and her new boat. Sad but true. I expected someone here to know better?

Re: Gove the Twat does it again.
Among numerous objections to this brain-fart: Royal yachts effectively became a thing of the past once fast and reliable air transport became available. Then consider the amount of time effectively wasted while the yacht transits from port A to port B - possibly days at a time. If the royals are going to pay their way as ambassadors for Merry Olde Englande, you can't really afford to have 'em bobbing about on the high seas for a lot of the time.
Of course, if (perish the thought), the new yacht does come to pass, the maiden voyage could be to Kenya, which means going right past Somalia

So Kevin, you advocate gifting them a private jet instead?

Re: Gove the Twat does it again.
Effectively, they already have that, operated by an RAF squadron - jets and helicopters. Officially, carting the Royals around is not the top priority. Unofficially, it benefits the Royals as they now only get charged for the operating costs when they actually use one of the aircraft. The capital and maintenance costs are the RAF's. Sneaky, eh?Svartalf wrote:So Kevin, you advocate gifting them a private jet instead?

The Royal family has its own helicopter as well.

I think the Dominions should contribute to the cost of the yacht.

Re: Gove the Twat does it again.
Gove has a few image problems! - but I actually think he is in the right spot at Education, as he actually cares about the subject (rather than it being a stepping stone to bigger things).....whether his plans end up working well is another thing, but at least he is trying to tackle the institutional stupidity within the UK education establishment. In my day job I use indicators to quickly tell me how a company is doing, some are directly core business related (how many plastic widgets an hour are produced etc) and some not (what does the staff Kitchen look like!)......given that only 18 UK teachers have been struck off for incompetence in the past 40 years tells me all I need to know........of course lots of squeals from folk invested in the Status Quo - but will always be thus.
In regard to the Boat for the Queen, my initial reaction was negative!.......but upon reflection perhaps not such a bad idea. Build it in Britain (can we still build ships?) and use it around the world as a floating Embassy for both the Royals and the Govt / Business. Also certain advantages for security (as well as some downsides).....and if the RN can spare a Warship (do we still have those?) then makes a decent looking arrival. Something the size (and look) of the old Royal Yacht - it's what sells well to Johnny Foreigner.
Probably the key will be public subscription (if opened up for business use then should not be a problem) - even if the Govt has to provide / guarantee the initial funding. Ongoing costs taken for the Overseas Development Budget!

Re: Gove the Twat does it again.
Once upon a time when they were still asking what might be done on the site of the future millennium dome. I suggested the building be a giant working clock, representing both Greenwich and time. It was the ideal fucking spot and place for it but as usual, I was ignored in favour of hollow profitless nonsense. I don't doubt my suggestions for the olympic celebrations will equally be ignored, but this time I'm making my suggestions public since I realise politicians think the nothing they know is more valuable that the public opinion.
For the Queen's diamond jubilee we shouldn't buy her a yacht, thats stupid. I say we execute one of them live in trafalgar square at midday on her birthday, sell tickets, live TV rights and commemorative DVD's. I reckon we could not only make a tidy penny, but we could make it an annual event, proving the royals are excellent for tourism.

Can have a yacht and your idea - personally I favour crucifixtion. and if still alive after 1 day - set 'em on fire!
Killing the Royal family doesn't seem to have harmed the French Tourist industry.

Re: Gove the Twat does it again.
I have to agree with you, somewhat grudgingly about Gove, though in actual fact a passion for your portfolio as a minister (which he has for Education, however misguided he might be), is not necessarily an advantage and quite possibly it is a disadvantage. Good ministers take a thorough birds eye view of their subject, negotiate policy if it needs changing and execute it. It is those skills, irrespective of the subject, that makes them good at the job I would argue. Gove has wanted to get his hands on this portfolio for twenty years. In my old job I used to go to London for absorb new Education policy and meet junior minister now and again. Gove was reported, when it was said that a certain thing was not possible or desirable to do, said something to the effect 'don't tell me that, I have been waiting 15 years to do this!'.Jesus_of_Nazareth wrote:Gove has a few image problems! - but I actually think he is in the right spot at Education, as he actually cares about the subject (rather than it being a stepping stone to bigger things).....whether his plans end up working well is another thing, but at least he is trying to tackle the institutional stupidity within the UK education establishment. I also agree with you about British teachers. I have said it before and I'm happy to repeat that I believe UK teaching unions are one of the main reasons our education has not kept up with much of the rest of the world, despite all the money Labour threw at it.
I used to go into school staff rooms occasionally and I have to tell you they are one of the most depressing, energy lacking and 'flat' environments one would care to visit.

I agree with you 100% about UK teacher unions. Thatcher took on the miners and defeated them, but nobody's had a proper go at the teacher unions, and they have more power than is good for our children.Rum wrote:I have to agree with you, somewhat grudgingly about Gove, though in actual fact a passion for your portfolio as a minister (which he has for Education, however misguided he might be), is not necessarily an advantage and quite possibly it is a disadvantage. I disagree 100% with anything positive said about Gove.
What lazy teachers (of whom there are plenty) need is a shot in the arm of the kind of altruism that has always been shown by the good ones (of whom, thankfully, there are also plenty.)
Pray, do not mock me: I am a very foolish fond old man; And, to deal plainly, I fear I am not in my perfect mind.
