But it's not a matter of boo hoo, poor Taliban, is it? It's a matter of soldiers (Marines) violating the rules of their own military code, and international rules agreed upon by the government of the nation which they are fighting for, dying for and representing.laklak wrote:Boo hoo. Poor Taliban.
Fuck 'em.
As reprehensible as the ideology and actions of the Taliban are, the Taliban doesn't profess to be something different.
Also, I'm still waiting for a followup report confirming the dead were combatants, much less Taliban. The latest reports indicate the U.S. military is still unclear on the circumstances of the killings and the identities of the dead. Remember that this took place in a region that's been described in news reports as both a centre of Taliban activity, but also one of the major, traditional poppy-growing regions. I get the feeling that some people believe every male Afghani, especially an armed one, is "a Taliban." I believe it's much more complex than that, bearing in mind the isolated "war lord" culture in the outer areas.
And finally, and I'll cede to more the knowledgeable re: military issues, but I understand these Marines were members of an elite sniper division consisting of about 1,000 troops specializing in long-range action. The time frame of their deployment was seven months, and during that time, seven were killed. Although I realize I may take flack for this, but this seriously doesn't bring to mind a unit that was engaged in the kind of devastating, daily brutality of warfare that might tip some over the edge in way of psychological trauma. Again, I am willing to stand corrected, but the numbers don't add up to me.

It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important.

I'm willing to bet that somebody tried to kill them at least once a week, if not once a day.

I once made the analogy of a person living in a tough neighborhood. They might be worry that someone would mug them, but they wouldn't go out the door expecting it. In a combat zone you KNOW someone is out there planning to kill you, and if you don't go out the door ready for bear, you will die before your tour is over, almost guaranteed. Those dead fuckers were part of that group. The enemy. The "I'll kill you if you don't kill me" folks. This kind of stress manifests in strange ways at times.amok wrote:OK. General Pershing during Islamic uprisings in the Philippines in the early 20th Century was rumored to have buried some militants in a grave full of pig entrails to scare them.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Many people are still missing the point about the nature of military discipline, and the value it brings to the public and international image of any even military force...

This won't damage the public image of the US military. The public/international image of the US military is already so bad that a story like this is most likely respond to with "big surprise". This is no shocker.JimC wrote:Many people are still missing the point about the nature of military discipline, and the value it brings to the public and international image of any even military force...
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

We're supposed to be the good guys. The good guys don't do things like this.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
