Facebook Seeks Your Soul?

Timeline puts your life in Facebook's hands

WE ARE born, we live, we die - and now we can do it all on Facebook. The social network recently rolled out Timeline, a dramatic update to its profile pages that lists everything you have ever done on the site in reverse order, right back to your very first post. You can even recreate your past, posting "status updates" to fill out your Timeline from birth.

This is more than just a design upgrade. Timeline is going to change the way we use Facebook, especially when it comes to viewing other people's profiles. "People will be doing more digging, just because that's human nature," says Rik Ferguson, a security researcher at Trend Micro in Marlow, UK. We can expect a split between those who share information from before they joined Facebook and those who don't. "I haven't uploaded any past activity and I have no intention of doing it," says Ferguson. "There's another generation of Facebook users who are quite happy to have large amounts of their past and present stored online and shared with their community of friends."

I put up nothing but my columns and the odd opinion. Never will put up anything that can link me personally to the account.

You've got to be delusionally stupid to put personal information or photos up on the web, anywhere, any time.

Seth is right on this occasion. Identity theft is rife and the tools to extract and profit from personal data are becoming ever more sophisticated. The information is exploited by advertisers to 'personalise' your web experience and can be just as easily be used by criminal networks to nudge you towards giving ever more information...until suddenly you wake up with no shoes and no wallet.

People are stupid that way sometimes. Criminals have broken into homes when the owners post when they're going on vacation, while at least one other burglar got caught because he left himself logged in after checking his FB in the job.

It is public. Very public! As long as you keep that in mind, you probably won't have many problems.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.

I once had a very long and intimate discussion with a 17 year old waitress I knew casually about her Facebook activity. She had friended me and the first time I looked at her page I was horrified at the amount of information she had revealed about herself and her family. None of it was salacious, no nudie photos or anything, just innocent chatter and snapshots that revealed literally everything a sex maniac would need to know to stalk and rape her (and her two younger sisters) at will. The information she had posted included things that allowed me to deduce an enormous amount of personal data, from her home address to what cars her parents drive (with their license plates), to the location of her bedroom in their house (ground floor, walk-in sliding door facing a golf course and concealed by trees) to photos of her younger sisters, her parents general work schedules and where they worked, and the fact that she and her sisters were "latchkey" kids who were home alone in the afternoons most weekdays.

Scared the crap out of me for her safety.

I scared the crap out of her by telling her all that information one day, in detail, and the next day her facebook account had been closed.

Cyberspace is NOT a safe place.

Everything I post is set minimum to friends only. I'm not going to stop sharing my life online because it's how I keep in contact with my friends and family 5500 miles away. I like the timeline, but again, I only share what I want people to see and I am picky about who I friend (i.e. not strangers).

Yep. My dad is on it and a 'friend' and he reads my stuff. At first I regretted it, but in retrospect it means I don't post anything I wouldn't want him to know about! My own familial censor!
