I read Incarnations as they came out. Very frustrating. Same with the Amber novels. I had to re-read the previous ones before starting a new one or I'd be totally lost. When he went into the Merlin branch I really

Google 'science fiction forums' and you'll find, not surprisingly, that there are already a bunch of them out there. For a new forum to succeed in an established niche, it has to offer something that can't be found/added elsewhere.
Not trying to rain on your parade, but there are a lot of startups that quickly fade away.
Here's a good forum about, forums:

Thanks, I'll check it out. Wild idea to begin with, but I'd still like to run one.amused wrote:Google 'science fiction forums' and you'll find, not surprisingly, that there are already a bunch of them out there. Wouldn't really rather run a forum dedicated to trolls?
You would be the *perfect* admin for that!

The last Piers Anthony book I read had something to do with an athlete in a tech world who had sex with a robot and then traveled to a fantasy world to have sex with a unicorn. Or something like that. Been a while.Coito ergo sum wrote:I have read the major biggies, I think. The last series I read that could be considered "fantasy" I think, would be Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series. I really liked that. Very cool. If you haven't read it, I recommend it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarnatio ... mmortality
The fantasy series I've found most refreshing in the last decade or so is Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. It takes a standard fantasy trope - dragons and the people who ride them - then yanks it out of the swords-and-sorcery setting and drops it into the middle of the Napoleanic wars. Alternate history written by someone who's studied the period extensively, creates interesting characters (one of whom is, I'm convinced, actually Clinton Huxley), and has a knack for coming up with inventive ways strategy and tactics would change with the presence of giant flying reptiles. Oh, and there are lots of wooden sailing ships firing cannons at one another, which always appeals to me for reasons I can't, er, fathom.
I need to find a new book to read - it's been 6 months or so. On the up side, I have managed to grind through most of a 3-year backlog of Discover, Scientific American, and Wired (you'd be amazed at what Google was working on in 2009!)
As to the forum idea: If you build it, I will come.
Er, wait, that came out wrong.
Oops, so did that.
See, it was a movie reference, and... oh, never mind.

A year or so ago I saw a full-page ad in a magazine that covers SF/Fantasy publishing (Locus, I think) for a subscription-based web site which pays authors to publish erotic SF/F online through them. Not sure if it was the same place, but I found something called Circlet (circlet.com) through Teh Googlze that looks simliar.Gawdzilla wrote:Erotic SciFi. Interesting niche.

Anthony uses that "this world with a portal to that world" meme a lot.
As for the forum, I need a hook.

The geekery is starting to fog up my screen already.
