A 15-year-old boy was tortured and drowned by his sister and her boyfriend because they believed he was a witch, the Old Bailey has heard.

Kristy Bamu, from Paris, was found dead in Newham, east London, on Christmas Day in 2010.

The boy had 101 injuries and died from being beaten with a metal bar and drowning, the court heard.

His sister Magalie Bamu and her boyfriend, Eric Bikubi, both Congolese and aged 28, of Newham, deny murder.

Prosecutors told jurors of acts they described as "depraved", "wicked" and "cruel".

Mr Bikubi admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, a plea not accepted by the prosecution.

Superstition of equal if not greater repugnance is only a few generations away in the general population here. There is still massive interest, even in atheist circles, in things like zombies and what I would consider dangerous primitivism. Much of this could return as a serious issue if our education system faltered as it appears to be doing in places. It is ultimately a education task. And a permanently ongoing one since ignorant superstion is a deep well going back far into our cultural heritage. We are always a generation away from losing all our progress. We all have a responsability to confront the woo-merchants...to educate not just ridicule.

No dear. Your converging the western, popular witch myth with that of 'witches' in traditional African folklore. In those areas of the world, someone can be a witch without even knowing it, and can evoke bad luck and even doom upon their family and others. Supposedly the 'witch' inhabits the lower stomach of the person, and must be exercised accordingly.

I heard this reported on the radio lunchtime news and I found the description of the boy's body as the paramedics found it quite distressing. I can only assume that the perpetrator's religion did not make them do it, it just authorised their desire to do it.
