Obama: Media should focus on issues, not personal lives

Post by Robert_S » Mon Dec 26, 2011 10:23 am

President Obama doesn't care for the media attention surrounding the personal failings of the Republicans running against him.

In an interview with ABC News' Barbara Walters, the president deflected a question about former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's three marriages and said the focus should be on the differences in their political positions — not marital problems or personal foibles.

"I'm not big on people's personal lives — being poked and prodded and that that ends up being the primary issue," Obama said, in an interview that aired Friday on 20/20. "We've got such big issues to deal with right now and there's such substantial differences right now between certainly my position and any of the Republican candidates. That's what we should focus on."

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Ad homs are part of the political process, mainly due to stupid people running for office who can't address the issues.

the headline should have read: Candidate has strong and stable family life, doesn't stick his nose in other people's personal business.

Funny about that: Up in the liberal and less religious US states where they don't go around trying to legislate other people's lives and choices; they don't have nearly as much divorce, teen pregnancy, abortion, STDs...

Legislating morality has never worked.

I can lay down a moral law for myself and live by it quite easily.

That's not legislated, however. There's no external body with assumed power forcing your decisions on you in that case.
