There's a distinction between disliking religion and being a religious bigot. You might want to refer to the definition of "bigotry" for details.amused wrote:I guess the response to this would be, so?Seth wrote:It's absolutely clear to me that you care less about the alleged child abuse than you do about finding any possible excuse to revile and insult Catholics and their faith. - WikipediaA bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing sex, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs or spirituality, nationality, language, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, age, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders. Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views.
By that definition, Seth, you are bigoted against pretty much the rest of the entire planet.

The findings appear to show abuse was more widespread in the Netherlands than in Ireland, in a scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church in Europe and the United States and forced Pope Benedict to apologise to victims.

"The church committed crimes against humanity," said Bert Smeets of Mea Culpa, an organization to help victims.
The investigation was commissioned by two Catholic bodies, the Conference of Bishops and the Dutch Religious Conference, in 2010 after cases surfaced involving paedophile priests in the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Canada and the United States.
Abuse by Catholic priests, laymen and laywomen was systematically covered up by the church to protect its reputation, the commission said, adding that the church was guilty of "inadequate supervision" and "inadequate action."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45696203/ns ... uzfi-ZAJTQThe commission said child sexual abuse was no more prevalent in Catholic institutions than in ones run by other groups but was twice as high as the national average of 10 percent.

Hardly. I'm a Tolerist™, so as a matter of doctrine I'm tolerant of differing beliefs and have few prejudices. I am, I admit, devoted to my opinions, particularly the opinion that many atheists are anti-religious bigots, but that opinion is based on critically robust evidence of such bigotry, so it's really just a rational recognition of factual information.amused wrote:Seth wrote:There's a distinction between disliking religion and being a religious bigot. I said nothing of the kind. I said, and still maintain, that you have been consistently defending pedophiles and their enablers in the church in all your posts on topics like these.Seth wrote:When you tell him to refrain from saying that I support or condone pedophilia, I will.Ian wrote:Seth, this is a Reminder that this post: http://www.rationalia.com/forum/viewtop ... 5#p1070624 contains a personal attack on another member. Actually there is a valid, if almost universally condemned, position that one could take in defending pedophilia. It would take a tough person to argue it, but it is I suppose arguable.

That it's not abuse, but statutory rape, "statutory" being the operational world, because it's actually mutually enjoyed?
That the little ingrates should be grateful and show it by rewarding those who take so much crap trying to give them an education rather than whining about how it tastes nasty and their likkle keisters are hurty?

If the the representatives had not tried to shift the blame on to the sexual revolution and make themselves out as victims when all this came to light, then I imagine that the C Church would be facing fewer attacks.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

If they had cleaned up their act in the first place I 'd be cheering them on. But I'd still be pissed that they allowed, condoned and facilitated pedophilia on a world-wide and continuing basis. That should be enough in itself to declare the Catholic church a rogue organization. The RICO Act would apply in the US if our government had the balls to pursue it.Robert_S wrote:If the the representatives had not tried to shift the blame on to the sexual revolution and make themselves out as victims when all this came to light, then I imagine that the C Church would be facing fewer attacks.
