Where do you store your images on the web?

Post by apophenia » Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:46 am

My ISP has reverted from a policy of extending 25 MB of personal storage to users such as myself, and currently only allocates 4 MB. Aside from the insufficiency of this amount, I likely will abandon these wankers for more economical solutions which may not offer any personal storage. What do other people use for free (preferrably) web storage of images (and other content, if applicable) ?

Photobucket, I suppose, but that's more for the ease of posting stuff on forums...

Dropbox has great usability for any kind of files. Basic free size is 2GB. It also provides a special folder for pictures and files you want to make public. It has had some occasional security problems, though

Get it from this link http://db.tt/5Aj4hsx6, and both you and me get an extra 250MB. :smoke:

SpiderOak https://spideroak.com/ is another option, which has a very good zero knowledge policy, This means that everything gets encrypted in your computer, and they cannot get to your data, even if given a court order. Haven't tried that myself though.

I've always used imageshack.us
But it's a bit crap, and I only use it if I want to share photos on the forum, not for mass storage of my whole collection

Photobucket for me. I suppose other options might be better if I just need to make a single image accessible for some reason or other, but for most purposes Photobucket works fine.

I use filefreak, not particularly for any other reason than it's the one I happened to sign up with, - but it's good for me.

256 MB storage with 256 MB per day bandwidth. Maximum file size 50 MB. Up to 20 folders which can be public, hidden (requires URL), or private.

It's full of adverts, including one you have to click to skip, but it doesn't bother me since I'm only using it occasionally to share images, MP3s and other junk on the forum or wherever.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

What's wrong with flickr? I love it. I pay for it though (I think $25 a year) because there is no limit when you do, and I have many gigs and years of photos stored. I love the organization aspects of it, and it's always been fast and reliable for me :dunno:

Once you choose the size/resolution, yes. You just right click and copy link location :dunno:

Okay, I've had issue with flicker failing to link before, they may have correct that.

SmugMug, though like Rachel with Flickr I pay for it... http://www.intersiteimaging.com/

I love that they don't downsize or resample - both or which usually screws up / desaturates the colour - and people can see the original image at whatever you've elected to call the initial resolution (except for home page which arbitrarily disallows the same page design). In my case that's usually the camera's res minus any loss for straightening horizons /cropping out anything unwanted, etc., and individual images are up to ~18 MB as of now (but more with my next body). But I find their support for all but the most basic stuff sucks.

I've used Imageshack, Photobucket and Dropbox, and find Flicker to be superior to all. I never have problems with it, and uploading photos is a cinch.
