Gilani and Zardari Knew Osama Was Going Down?

Post by Schneibster » Sat Dec 03, 2011 10:40 pm

Dawn is reporting that Mansoor Ijaz has said that they did, that they were informed in advance by the US. Also that Zardari knew about the memo to Mike Mullen informing him that the military was going to try a coup, now being called "Memogate" in the Pakistani papers and already having resulted in the forced resignation of the diplomat who wrote it. That was Hussein Haqqani, former Pakistani ambassador to the US. Ijaz was the person who actually delivered the memo, and is also a fairly well-known commentator, as well as a wealthy businessman.

There are many actors here and the motivations are as bad as a soap opera.

Here is the Dawn article.
Here is the Newsweek Pakistan article referred to in the Dawn article.
Here's Gilani accusing the PML-N of attempting to destabilize the government through non-democratic means by bypassing their legislature with the memo.

Keep in mind that Pakistan has spent most of the last several decades ruled by a military junta, most recently headed up by Musharraf.

These are the same people who are trying to figure out how to deny their liasons' voices on tape giving permission for the helicopter attacks they're blaming NATO for. Not to mention refusing to join a commission to find out the truth. I would call those two moves pretty transparent.

You know, Gilani and Zardari are very Italian-sounding names. I was a bit confused there for a moment. :?

Anyway, it's not a good time for a Pakastani official to be "outed" as cooperating with the US to this degree. Interesting times.
