:blah:

The German guy.........
On Nov. 16, a German manager with Mercedes-Benz was arrested under the law for not having a driver's license with him while driving a rental car. Tuscaloosa city attorney Tim Nunnally said the charge was dismissed after the man provided the documents in municipal court.
You get stopped by the cops, and are unable to produce a driver's license (or other ID) then it is off to jail you go.

The Japanese guy doesn't look like he was even cited under the immigration law as he had his passport and international driver's license with him. I'm sure the news will print a correction in a few days.

I'm sure Honda and Mercedes appreciates the new law as illegals cause quite a burden to local property taxes which they in part pay for.

He had a European driver's license on him.

Maybe you can provide a link so we all know what publication not to bother reading because they're not very good at journalism.

Speaking of which, say I don't want to drive and have a license. Can I just walk in the middle of the road? It is for public use and people use to walk all the time on roads.

Pedestrians have rules they're expected to follow just as motorists do. I had to break it to one guy that we weren't paying his medical bills because he jogged out from between two cars in the middle of the block and hit our insured's car, followed by him being propelled a good distance through the air, while doing a passable imitation of a rag doll.

No more than you can drive down the middle. Your right to use the public highways (or sidewalks at UC Davis) are subject to reasonable regulation as to time, place and manner. You may walk on the shoulder however, preferably facing oncoming traffic.

In Oz, if the police pick you up and you haven't got your licence on you. you are simply directed to report to your local police station within a certain number of days and show them your licence.

Clearly, such a civilised proposition has not yet made it to Alabama...

Is "driving while black" still an offense there?

I assume that Oz stipulation requires that you are able to identify yourself. What's a cop to do with no ID or driver's license and can't speak English?

Your quote doesn't exist in the link in the IP. I have this:
While Tuscaloosa police arrested the man last week for not having proper citizenship documents while driving a rental car in the city, city attorney Tim Nunnally said in an email the charge was dismissed after the man later provided the documents in municipal court.
