Re: Mid-life crises
Late 30s? Ian, you've got a LONG way to go yet. I didn't even move back overseas till I was 41, didn't meet Mrs. Lak till I was 47. I was slogging through a miserable, failed marriage and was ready for a change. Since then I've lived all over the world, got divorced and then married again, have a new, very large reconstituted family living on 4 continents, a whole new career and am having the time of my life. Wouldn't trade a minute of it. If what I went through was a mid life crisis then I say bring it on.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

No shortcuts, Gallstones?
Ah well. I kinda figured.
You sound so happy, it's nice to be near your posts these days. Makes me think you're probably giving me good advice.
Except that one bit, about babies growing up fast!

Gallstone and hades
One of you is about ten years "older" than me in parenting and the other about ten years "younger", so reading both of your thoughts & feelings gives valuable and heartwarming perspective. Thank you for sharing!
And yes there are no shortcuts - basic math, physics and programming classes that I had been putting off for more than a decade taught me that 2007-2010. Better accept reality late than never - but earlier would have been better.

How about a plan that you will, ASAP, bring your family to Oz and spend 6 months touring around in a 4WD, seeing amazing sights?
And while in Melbourne, we can go on a pub crawl while Bron fusses over your wife and kids!

Re: Mid-life crises
I find I'm happier in my life now at 41 than I was in my 20s or 30s. I don't have the body I had then, but I also don't have the bullshit either. I love my job, my friends, my little dog, little apartment, and little garden. I don't have to answer to anyone which is quite nice as well.

Saoirse-- I've always liked that name. Even though I have to double-check my spelling.
