Corporal Punishment

Post by Coito ergo sum » Wed Nov 23, 2011 3:53 pm

The Texas Supreme Court suspended a judge Tuesday whose beating of his then-teenage daughter in 2004 was viewed millions of times on the Internet.

Aransas County court-at-law Judge William Adams was suspended immediately with pay pending the outcome of the inquiry started earlier this month by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, according to an order signed Tuesday by the clerk of the state's highest court.

I find it hard to believe that people beat their kids. I see no reason for it, ever.

The only time that I think physical correction is worthwhile is when a situation arises that is the equivalent to a child about to put their hand on a hot stove burner. A quick, sudden, slap to the hand, might be appropriate. But, that's nothing to do with inflicting pain as punishment, and even in that case I only say "might" be appropriate. It would seem to me to be just as effective to grab the kids hand, and issue a stern lecture. But, in the case of a slap on the hand or something, it's more of an "attention grabber" than a punishment.

But, beating a teenager? There isn't ever a good reason for that. That's a failure of parenting.

That's pretty horrendous, especially since he's a family court judge. I agree, there's no call for such violence and brutality towards a child.

According to the judge she put that up on YouTube after he told her that he would cut off her income when she dropped out of college.

I saw that one when the video first came out. It's pretty brutal.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. We don't need more incompetent judges. I remain concerned that they will not do the right thing because it's in Texas.
