EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration

Post by Warren Dew » Sun Nov 20, 2011 5:52 pm

EU officials concluded that, following a three-year investigation, there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact.

Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.

They're technically right. From the same article:
A meeting of 21 scientists in Parma, Italy, concluded that reduced water content in the body was a symptom of dehydration and not something that drinking water could subsequently control.
It is a natural and unpreventable process in human physiology. Drinking water rehydrates and so alleviates the symptom. Accusing them of 'contravening common sense and science', or whatever, is just stupid.

Anything which reduces the craze for buying bottled water is a good thing!

Amen brother. It's one of the biggest legal scams imaginable, and compared to drinking tap water, very unfriendly to Ye Olde Environment.

Excuse me? They couldn't possibly be more stupid. "Reduced water content in the body" is not a "symptom" of dehydration, it's the DEFINITION of dehydration for pete's sake! And of course water alleviates the symptom, IF YOU ARE DEHYDRATED.

The claim is that drinking water PREVENTS dehydration, which it does. If you drink adequate amounts of water during the day you will NEVER BECOME DEHYDRATED, and excess water in your system will be excreted as urine and sweat as your body naturally keeps your fluid balance at its optimum level.

Idiots. Complete, stark-raving mad lunatic idiots, every one. Those "21 scientists" should be stripped of their degrees and given shovels so they can dig ditches in the hot sun until they become dehydrated. Completely dehydrated...like a mummy from Egypt.

On the other hand.......
How dumb do you have to be to think "prevents dehydration" is a smart marketing slogan for bottled water? Unless you think your customer base are retards.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Does the ban extend to Gatorade?

Really? We should accept your bald assertion without any supporting argumentation demonstrating in what way I'm ignorant? I carefully analyzed the asinine claims of "21 scientists" and proved that they are wrong, and that the claim made by advertisers is absolutely scientifically correct using logic, reason and scientific fact. And all you've got is personal insult?

Better luck next time, I'd say you're the ignorant one.

Well, given Pord's rebuttal I'd say that's pretty much a certainty.

There are three types of dehydration: hypotonic or hyponatremic (primarily a loss of electrolytes, sodium in particular), hypertonic or hypernatremic (primarily a loss of water), and isotonic or isonatremic (equal loss of water and electrolytes).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dehydration

Types 1 and 3 cannot be solved by drinking water. In fact, they are both exacerbated by drinking too much water.

But do you know how delicious and refreshing spring water is compared to tap water? There are damn few places in France where I'll willingly drink the tap water as is, without adding flavoring agents or turning it into a hot drink.

You lie.

Type 2 is solved, and prevented, by drinking water. Type 3 is also partly solved by drinking water, and also partly prevented by drinking water. Thus the claim "water prevents deyhdration" is a true statement.

Lie. Two types aren't. The claim on the bottles that they cure or prevent dehydration is therefore untrue.
