Adding to what, for what?
I have an i7 64 bit system, and I do OCR work. Scanning the docs in and running the OCR program to convert images to text.

I still don't know what is actually said in that clip. I must watch that film some day.

Adding an extra 8 GB may or may not be of benefit. It depends on how much of a memory hog your scanning and OCR work is.

It takes up about 3 gig of memory when its OCRing. The scanner I haven't noted yet, but I do know it slows down when I'm importing TIFFs and OCRing at the same time. (In my old system I used to have to let the program load the TIFF completely before starting a new scan, this one doesn't have to do that.)

Unless Windows task manager reports that you're using more memory than you have physical RAM installed, then I doubt adding more RAM would help. It seems you have enough RAM and raw CPU horsepower for this work, so any bottlenecks that may exist are elsewhere, maybe in the scanning process itself.

I'm using a 11" x 18" scanner, I can do two letter size pages at once, and the software isn't optimized for 64-bit, so there is a myriad of issues here. Right now I only have 1140MB free RAM. (I probably need to do a warm boot and look at the usage again. BRB)

If you get more Ram you will be able to have more forums open and post more quickly !

You're have a 64bit operating system, so at least it can see all the RAM. Are your scanning and optical character recognition programs 64bit too? If they are, the speed benefits are greater than if they utilise only half the pipe at 32bits, and cannot see more than about 2.7 Gigs of RAM at any rate. Another thing to consider is if you can simply add a couple of 4 Gig memory modules to the ones you already have, or if you'll have to throw out four 2 Gig sticks and replace them with four 4 Gig ones. In the end only you can decide if the benefits outweigh the costs.

Cold boot gives 5.7 G free. After I load my usual browsers I get 4.3 G free.

I can get the 64-bit drivers for the Mustek scanner, but I'd have to upgrade the OCR program to get 64-bit functionality. Too much money for that option right now. I might treat myself from the bodily injury claim. (But first, of course, I have to buy Ayaan some nice opals. :leave:)

You're using 2.3 G before actually doing anything? You must have a zillion services and suchlike installed.
