Iran explosion at Tehran military base

A huge explosion has rocked a military base west of Iran's capital, Tehran, officials say.

Several people were killed after the blast inside a Revolutionary Guards weapons depot, according to the semi-official Fars news agency, but this has not been confirmed.

Windows in nearby buildings have been shattered and the blast was heard in central Tehran, 40 km (25 miles) away.

A helicopter and ambulances have reportedly been sent to the scene.

Local MP Hossein Garousi said "a large part of an ammunition depot exploded," parliament's website reported.

It is not clear what caused the explosion in the village of Bidganeh, near the city of Karaj.

Karaj resident Kaveer told the BBC's Newshour programme that the sound was "deafening".

I've seen one ammo dump go up. We shagged ass and let it cook. When we checked the roster we realized the probable cause of the explosion, somebody had put an idiot on guard duty there, which included checking the hootches for leaks when it rained.

We don't know for certain what got hit or exactly what happened. As the article says above:

An "official" reported it as an ammo dump at a military base. Whether an explosion took out an ammo dump or some other installation at a military base and whether an explosion actually happened and whether any explosion was indeed at a military base is still conjecture IMO. It may well have been a successful intrusion which took out it's primary target but has been reported by Iran as being an accident. It might be an attempt at a more valuable asset which hit an ammo dump instead. It might have been an accident in an ammo dump. I don't trust anonymous Iranian "officials" to provide a true description of events and I wouldn't necessarily expect any actual attacker to identify themselves or correct the party line.

It wasn't Israel bombing Iran's nuclear program, though. There're much bigger fish to fry than the agricultural and medical nuclear research center that might have been used to temporarily store some illicit stuff once.
