Not what you thought it was?
Have you ever discovered that something you thought was native to your country was actually from elsewhere?

As an American I just assumed everything was brought here. What's surprised me the most has been the number of things that were native to the US (in terms of plants and animals) that I thought came from somewhere else. Of course when it comes to technology I always assume that we invented it, but that it's now being built in Asia.

Yeah. Democracy. I thought we were the only ones with it until I was high school, I think. (Not that what we have is actually a democracy, anyway.)

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Hmm...
Good question. I have this tendency to forget the depth of my own past ignorance. Certainly helps me fool myself into thinking I'm smarter than I am

Not exactly what the OP was asking, but until recently I'd kinda assumed that the origins of the phrase "Indian Summer" had something India - not Red Indians.
