I'm going with my original theory: Cain accidentally spurted out a piece from a pre-planned response about Iran into his answer about China. Which isn't quite as bad as not knowing that China was a nuclear power, but still pretty embarrassing if that's the truth behind all this.

Campaigns are demanding and people are going to slip up ad misspeak, and then have their quotes pushed by media outlets that don't like them. There are obvious verbal flubs (and occasional misinterpreted sarcasm) that are easy to overlook, and then there are flubs that seem to expose genuine ignorance. Of course Obama knows there are really 50 states; that gaffe was an easy one to brush aside. Cain's understanding of the Chinese military? Not necessarily an obvious point, so suspicions of ignorance on that subject are pretty reasonable.

Politics is so emotionally charged, that accusations of ignorance or other such faults that rely on subjective interpretations are hardly constructive. I recommend giving Cain the benefit of a doubt, if only so that when you make clearly valid criticisms of him, then those who support him will be less inclined to assume bias on your part.

Meh. I'm willing to accept that Cain simply misspoke. Shit happens. Politicians are people too. But making up a bullshit story to cover his ass, that demonstrates an important character flaw, the inability to buck up and say, "I screwed the pooch." As to the rest here...

What bothers me is that he might not have a clear idea of the difference between them. In fact I suspect he doesn't.

And that's as much Caribou Barbie's fault as his. You simply can't run people like that in a real campaign and not pay the price later. Nor like Cain, either. Nor have VPs who can't spell "potato."

We don't need another stupid President. We have enough problems.
