Three teens in court over Facebook poppy burning picture

Post by PsychoSerenity » Fri Nov 04, 2011 9:39 am

I heard this on the radio yesterday and couldn't believe it. How the hell can someone be arrested for this?
Three teenagers have appeared in court over the alleged burning of a Remembrance Day poppy.

Two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old were charged with incitement to hatred when they appeared before magistrates in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

The youngest of the trio was also charged with improper use of the public electronic communications network.

The three were arrested by members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) after a photograph showing two teenagers burning a poppy was posted on a social networking site.

A PSNI spokesman said police became aware of the existence of certain material on social media networks on Tuesday.

A number of arrests were made and all three were brought before the court on Wednesday.

"Individuals should be mindful of the content of any material they upload onto social media networks," he added.

For a start there are plenty of perfectly legitimate reasons to be against the whole poppy thing - for as long as poppies have been used for fund raising, there have been criticisms that it's nationalistic and glorifying war. - But even if they weren't doing it as a political statement, and were just doing it to get a rise out of people, they have every right to do so. What they've done has been called a "hate crime", but it's purely symbolic, and it doesn't even target any particular group or minority or anything as far as I'm aware. And if they're not allowed to post a picture of a burning poppy, then I'm not allowed to post a picture of Muhammed.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Its not an offense per se. Towards the end of the article the underlying issue comes out. They appear to have been catholics trying to incite hatred as the wars which remembrance day are about are viewed as 'English' ones by many republicans/catholics

Religion poisons everything I have read somewhere...

Yes I suspected it was something to do with the religious situation in Northern Ireland that I don't really understand - but that still doesn't change that they got arrested for posting a picture of something purely symbolic on facebook.

They desecrated something which was used in the collective grief process. Symbolic, everything is symbolic. What they did attacked a foundation stone of a civilized society ie respect for the dead....gravestones are symbolic, maybe toppling them should be overlooked too? :fp:

Gravestones are private property relating to specific individuals - completely different.

It's a flower.

I could go out and burn a rose ... or a frangipani blossom ... or a cactus ... and post it wherever I like. In fact, I suggest for the next ratz photographic assignment: burn a plant and post it on that facebook page ... :smoke: *choof*

That is truly ridiculous. Arrested? What a fucking load of shit.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.
